SIX FREAKING WEEKS
my jaw hit the floor
"and it hasn't done him any harm"
nono that's right apart from the raging eczema all his life and the lousy digestion
"it depends on the individual child. I couldn't have waited any longer."
how do you even give a six week old baby solids??
it has made me very cross actually

see, if my mum was here she would say
SEE?? that's why you should have your baby at home. Hospitals - nasty dirty places, always bossing you around and no place for a baby

That's the stuff, Bubble. Mad Jack McMad.

I can't understand anyone who blindly follows their HV's advice even when it seems utterly loopy - it's ONE person's recommendation (or order, with some HVs Angry) - on what is clearly a very important subject.

hunkermonkee · 21/05/2006 22:23

PMSL at a hospital being no place for a baby - she sounds great, your mum, harpsi!

nowanearlyNicemum · 21/05/2006 22:24

had dreadful woman to stay last weekend (wife of dp's mate) and she spent all w/e telling me how differently she did things with her children - 20 odd years ago. Including, putting cereal in his bottle from day 1 and solids at 1 month. She seemed so proud of herself - like she had the hungriest little monster on the planet. I was too busy picking my chin up off the floor to comment ShockShockShock

Mercy · 21/05/2006 22:25

but you are talking about what happened 30/40 years ago - not today

harmonicacarrier · 21/05/2006 22:25

she's fab my mum
I was thinking about setting up a helpline
HC's mum says:

"give the baby a spot!" (translation - stick your nipple in her mouth Grin
"that's completely normal!"
"oh you do look well! the weight is falling off you!"

My stepmother also used to give hers a teaspoon of whisky of an evening Shock Claimed it settled the colic. Whether that advice also came via a HV I wouldn't like to say, but it does seem incredible that this was only 30 years ago.

blueteddy · 21/05/2006 22:27

My Mum claims to have put rusk in our bottles from around 6 weeks old!! She says it made us sleep better!!

nowanearlyNicemum · 21/05/2006 22:27

maybe not Mercy,
in France virtually every mother I know has added 'farine/cereal/thickener stuff' to baby's night time bottle at varying ages. they all thought I was completely barmy not doing it.... drove me NUTS trying to explain that it really wasn't such a clever idea! Angry

Katymac · 21/05/2006 22:28

My GP advises flat coke for a tummy upset....and that's not so long agoGrin

Advise only works if you take it

Tortington · 21/05/2006 22:29

MY MIL talked about roast beef and gravy at some stupid age - i think its fucked up nostalgia

MrsMuddle · 21/05/2006 22:30

When I had DS1 in 1995, I was told to start weaning at 10 weeks. And that was only 11 years ago!

Mercy · 21/05/2006 22:30

Ok, but harpsi is incredulous that this is the advice given a generation or 2 ago.

How where they meant to know any different then?

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 21/05/2006 22:32

I was weaned at 12 weeks in 1963, ended up with a serious bowel obstruction.

Ds1 1988 - weaned at 12 weeks, ds2 same in 1991, no problems.

Dd born in 1993, ng fed, weaned at well over 12 months not fully on solids 'til 2, chronic excema and dodgy guts.

Go figure....

Mercy · 21/05/2006 22:33

flat coke (or pref. lemonade) does work for an upset tummy actually.

Not all 'old wives tales' are wrong!

flutterbee · 21/05/2006 22:33

My Mum had my eldest brother (36) weaned off milk totally by 6 months so God know when she started on solids. He is however one of the healthiest people I know and for some strange reason he has never ever even had a cold let alone an allergy.

harmonicacarrier · 21/05/2006 22:34

because, Mercy, my mother did no such thing. that's all I know.

OP posts:
Katymac · 21/05/2006 22:34

Mercy - I prob wouldn't give coke (flat or otherwise) to a 1yo tho'Wink

nowanearlyNicemum · 21/05/2006 22:36

I'm Shock too harpsi. As you say, how do you get solids into such a tiny creature ffs????!

JoolsToo · 21/05/2006 22:38

do you think in 30 years time your offspring will be saying

and do you know - my dm weaned at 6 months Shock and put us to sleep on our backs - doubleShock

cos you can bet your boots in the coming years there will be study after study about some aspect of child rearing that will turn current thinking on its head!

flutterbee · 21/05/2006 22:38

Lets all just remember that in 20-30years time there will be people sat on here laughing and being outraged at how we bought our children up. Advise on how to look after your child/children changes every few years as long as you do what you feel is best I can't see a problem.

flutterbee · 21/05/2006 22:39

snap jools

JoolsToo · 21/05/2006 22:39

WinkGrin

harmonicacarrier · 21/05/2006 22:40

yeah, maybe
but I might have the humility to say - yes, maybe I got it wrong. because Dh and his sister DO have terrible eczema and it has made their lives miserable.
maybe the two aren't related, but it does affect the way I feed dd's

OP posts:
nowanearlyNicemum · 21/05/2006 22:41

I'm sure you're right JoolsToo - can't help thinking it's bizarre though :)
