How much milk for 6.5 month old?

I have had big trouble with weaning. Still struggling but am wondering now if I am giving dd too much milk and that is why she keeps on refusing solids.
DD is 6.5 months and currently has 4x 8oz bottles a day and generally only leaves an ounce or 2 in each bottle, she also has cerial for breakfast, 2 cubes for lunch and 3 cubes for tea. She usually leaves most solids I offer tho. Am I giving her too much milk?

Hi, think I gave around 4 bottles a day too. Try slowly cutting the ounces down - give 7 ounces instead of 8 for example, then 6 oz. This is what I did. Eventually you can increase food. I wouldnt worry too much yet, my ds didnt eat that much too start with either.

Is this ebm or formula?
If ebm doesn't sound too much to me, but this will also depend on how big you baby is
When did you start weaning?
my DS which is just 6 months old is still not that interested in solids, and I've been trying for a month now.
Hope someone comes along that is more helpful

mumfor1sttime · 05/12/2005 14:42

Yes maybe someone more helpful than me....!

lindster · 05/12/2005 21:52

my hv said that they should be having atleast 20oz a day. My ds (nearly 7 months) has 21oz aday plus 3 meals. some people will say that milk should be the main diet but i think its important to build the solids up too.

Mumfor1sttime, hopefully you know (given the post time) that I was not commenting on your post, but on mine. I though I was the only one posting, and didn't think I was particularly helpful.

Dd is 33 wks and I started weaning at 25 wks. Only since last week has she started to take an interest in 'food'. She is now having the amounts you are describing after oooohhh 8 weeks? I wouldn't sweat it if I were you. Let her build an interest at her own pace.

mamadeux · 06/12/2005 23:40

My dd2 is 7 mths. I give 3 milk feeds a day of around 7 oz and she has 3 meals a day. Have stopped using cubes now as she needed about 6 to satisfy her!

Weaning is driving me mad too Charliegirl!!! I was expecting it to be really fun and exciting but I dread meal times...
Has anyone else experienced big problems keeping their baby regular? I am fighting my dd'd constipation on a weekly basis despite offering a very varied diet.

Have you tried feeding with weetabix ? Keeps my ds very regular!
Never understood the whole ice cube thing!

lindster · 07/12/2005 21:26

mama you do the same as me. At the moment he has readybek mixed wuth fruit for breakfast then yoghurt and banana for lunch then a proper dinner. I really want to change the lunch. Got to be simple, any ideas?

DD's nappies are now pretty regular, 2 or so a day but are muddy, kind of adult poo consistancy and there's never much of it (so so sorry for TMI) is that normal for weaning? She doesnt seem to me to be eating enough solid food to be causing such a change. I'm really worried now, she's okay in herself, always in good form and happy but sometimes squeals or cries when she's producing a dirty nappy.
I freaked out the other day and posted an emergency on Parenting for help when she was really constipated and screaming, was advised to try prunes which I did, had no effect really.

Mumfor1sttime, do you mix weetabix with cows milk or formula? Do you warm it up?

lindster · 09/12/2005 17:23

i used cows milk from 6 months and slightly warmed wheatabix. i now give him ready brek alot mixed with some fruit to vary it abit.

mumfor1sttime · 09/12/2005 17:27

I used formula milk to mix the weetabix when I started weaning at 5 months. At 7 months I used cows milk to mix.
I mash it up and heat in microwave for 25 secs.

about a pint a day at this stage, plus meals and cooled boiled water.

jstbcs · 09/12/2005 19:42

whispers (didnt think u were supposed to give ready brek due to high salt and sugar content?)

mumfor1sttime · 09/12/2005 19:44

jstbsc - please whisper quieter - thanks.

jstbcs · 09/12/2005 19:45

lol, didnt want to upset anyone or appear 'judgemental'...

mumfor1sttime · 09/12/2005 20:02

parp

jstbcs · 09/12/2005 20:03

dont 'parp' me,i dont care what ppl give their kids, whatever gets u through! but, didnt a baby die from high salt intake from ready brek?

mumfor1sttime · 09/12/2005 20:11

WTF! Evidence please?!
Im sure anything with high salt content if fed too often is harmful. But a tiny portion of ready brek every other day doesnt kill people!

jstbcs · 09/12/2005 20:14

it was in the Guardian.
