I don't care where it is in the UK, but I want to open my holiday cottage door straight onto the beach...

And it must have sand, and not be only pebbles. I know you won't WANT to recommend such places you have stayed because you're probably about to book again, but you must. It is a moral responsibility to tell others about them, not keep them to yourself, please.

It mustn't be a caravan park. And ideally it is all on its own, away from the crowds. I do not care a hoot about ice cream shops, or discos, or evening entertainment, or supermarkets nearby. In fact, such things would put me off. The more wild the neighbours, the better. If it has the word 'luxury' in its description, even better, but we can rough it too.

Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Cornwall, Suffolk, Northumberland, wherever: really, I don't care. But my children's happiness this summer is depending on YOU... No pressure or anything.

this the kind of thing you are looking for?!
Totally recommend the area if you want a remote location - just watch out for the midgies!

tapas · 05/01/2010 16:16

Excuse me avada kevadra...

Can't you tell us all?

Pretty please

DecorHate · 05/01/2010 16:38

If you are prepared to go to Ireland (most of which is not in the UK!) I think this is a place that was recommended by a MNetter a few years ago

www.welcome2worldholidays.com/ukholidays/accomadation/areas/ireland/countygalway/Renvyle/21-10-2005_ 12-10_InishkeenHouse/

I bookmarked the details as it sounded good (and a beach at the end of the garden was one of the things I remember) - the original link I saved is not working but I think this is the same place. The details are a bit sketchy but maybe you could email the owner for more info?

The MNetter who recommended it was called Aero - don't think I have seen her around for ages but she may have name-changed...

DecorHate · 05/01/2010 16:39

Sorry, don't know why there is a huge blank space...

OrmIrian · 05/01/2010 16:44

You could try Crantock, nr Penzance. That village is slap bang on the beach - you might have to walk a few yards to actually get your feet on the sand though.... Lovely beach though.

giddykipper · 05/01/2010 16:48

You want the Isles of Scilly

EccentricaGallumbits · 05/01/2010 16:50

meeee tooo. preferably not scotland though. too far away.

gizmo · 05/01/2010 16:51

Not exactly a budget option but I have been eyeing up the Scilly Isles and there are a few things that meet your description, particularly on Tresco: for example a number of new luxury options or perhaps something more traditional.

Just leave an extra day or two for travel - getting to the Scilly Isles is a bit of an adventure!

gizmo · 05/01/2010 16:51

Giddykipper: snap! Have you been? Is it worth the prices?

EccentricaGallumbits · 05/01/2010 16:57

is it true that if you get a small plane or helicopter to the scillies they weigh you?

giddykipper · 05/01/2010 16:57

They have never weighed me! Or my DH for that matter who is a little portly.

giddykipper · 05/01/2010 17:01

Gizmo, I have been going to Scilly since I was about 2 and my parents have a holiday home over there now (not directly on the beach Wilf but about 5 minutes walk . I can send you a link if you're interested).

I would live there if there was work. I love the place. It's like living in 1950s Britain. Stunning scenery, incredibly safe and friendly. Great for kids, lovely sandy beaches, far warmer than the mainland. I can't recommend it enough.

EccentricaGallumbits · 05/01/2010 17:02

portly

as well as a beach by the back door I'd also like to request somewhere that doesn't mind dogs.
maybe i should stop hijacking this and put in a requestthread of my own.

gizmo · 05/01/2010 17:04

OOOOoooooooo.

And sailing? DSs and DH spent much of their summer hols sailing: real father/sons bonding and we'd love to do it again. Not likely to apply to me this summer as will have miniscule baby if we do go.

giddykipper · 05/01/2010 17:05

By the way I wouldn't touch Tresco. I know people rave about the place but it's like an up market holiday camp. There are no 'locals' living there anymore. All the locals have been turfed out of their homes and the houses have been turned into holiday lets. It's a travesty, makes my blood boil.

You get a far better feel for the real Scilly if you go to one of the other islands. My parents house is on St Mary's, the largest island. St Agnes, Bryher and St Martin's are all very rural and absolutely idyllic. You can do day boat trips to all the off islands from St Mary's though.

giddykipper · 05/01/2010 17:06

St Mary's has a sailing school. DH, DSD and I had an afternoon sailing a Wayfarer with an instructor this summer. It was wild once you were out of the shelter of the islands.

auntycorny · 05/01/2010 17:07

Decorhate - I have stayed at Inishkeen house - the beach is quite a walk away - definitely not at the end of the garden.

WilfSell · 05/01/2010 17:08

oooooh loads of replies: thanks all. Now all you lurkers, Get ORF my thread and my links: they're mine, ALL MINE I tell you.

No really thanks - AK, I got your CAT - looks like a contender.

OP posts:
gizmo · 05/01/2010 17:08

Sorry Wilf for the hijack.

St Mary's appeals actually - just a bit more going on. But it's quite hard to find accommodation that isn't rather ropy. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong sites?

auntycorny · 05/01/2010 17:08

I also want to know about Avada's place.

giddykipper · 05/01/2010 17:09

Bugger it - this is my parents house.

And this is their old house which is literally on the beach.

flier · 05/01/2010 17:09

The western isles look at the pic of the beach.

auntycorny · 05/01/2010 17:11

wilf you'll tell me about avada's link won't you?
