We're going camping at half term for a week near Scarborough.

So far we've got Flamingo Land and Eden Camp lined up. We'd also like a day at a beach looing for fossils/rock Pooling so thought we might go to Robin Hood's Bay.

Any other suggestions? Thanks.

But nothing in York really as we've been there quite a bit and "done" Yorvik, railway museum, etc. DD is 8.

North York Moors Railway if you like steam trains

North York Moors itself great for walking and not jam packed like the blardy Derbyshire Dales

Whitby for cute town and best-ever fish and chips at Trenchers or Magpie, plus Abbey at top of 199 steps well worth a visit if you like history

Beaches: Runswick Bay, Whitby, Staithes is sweet little town.

I used to live in Whitby

Can be chilly tho

Forgot the Beck Hole Inn which is a great beer-serving walkers pub on the moors (or was when I lived there 12 yrs ago!)

will pop by and see the suggestions as we are off near that way too for half term, also camping...(having a trial run with the new tent in the garden tomorrow night hopefully)

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 08/05/2009 22:02

Where are you camping Chatee?

Sorry have just googled and the inn at Beck Hole is actually called the Birch Hall.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 08/05/2009 22:43

Thanks Clary. Will stop for a pint there if in the area. A day to Whitby sounds good. I've heard about the fish and chips at the Magpie.

Scarborough itself is nice for a donkey ride.

There's Tony's Shire Horse Centre but we thought it was odd. He was on Countryfile or some such the other week and he is as odd as ever. You just look at the horses most of the time and listen to Tony bumming on about them. It's his own personal hobby that he bores everyone with. The kids can groom shetland ponies for a while but that's the highlight.

Helmsley is very pretty and we liked Helmsley Castle. Good if you are into castles

pointydog · 08/05/2009 22:48

Going on a pedalo/rowing boat arounf Peasholm Park is pleasant and fun for the kids

Playdale Farm at Cayton near Scarborough is fab, brill farm and great play area.

pointydog · 08/05/2009 22:50

we liked the beach at Cayton because it was quiet, good for making sandcastles. Not rock pooling country, though

staintondale shore horse centre. I wouldn't

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 08/05/2009 22:53

I saw that Shire Horse Centre on CountryFile and thought it seemed like a bloke who had a few horses in the field at the back of his house. Wasn't on my list of things to visit.

Playdale FArm looks great. Thanks.

did you, stripey? lol. Yes, avoid.

And his wife hates the horses, did you see that?

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 08/05/2009 22:56

Yeah, think she was just the chief ice-cream seller or something!

OP posts:
pointydog · 08/05/2009 22:59

she just mopes about, scowling and cursing under her breath

pointydog · 08/05/2009 22:59

saying, 'that fucking tony'

Notalone · 08/05/2009 23:16

The Italian Gardens are beautiful and from there you can stroll down to the beach. Filey and Filey Brigg are both lovely too nearby

chatee · 09/05/2009 21:01

dare i say?.....the haven site at reighton sands(fingers crossed)please don't put me off but the little one needs his fix of rory the tiger(see what happened when we took one sun holiday and he became addicted)and i refuse to pay the extortionate prices for school holidays so happy campers we will be
are you anywhere near StripeyKnickersSpotty... ?

chatee · 09/05/2009 21:02

ps no trial run is just a little too windy-hopefully dry tomorrow and will have to have a trial then

blithedance · 09/05/2009 21:05

Scarborough has lovely beaches and all the seaside trappings. Also a Sea Life centre, a lovely park (just seen someone beat me to it - Peasholm Park) and mini railway. We have relatives in Scarborough and never run out of things to do on visits. I really want to see the geological museum but appreciate it's a minority interest!

chatee · 09/05/2009 21:15

little one is hoping to spend most of the time on the nice beaches but i think playdale farm park postcode will be put in the sat nav before we leave home(just in case of bad weather)
peasholm park and mini railway will also bring a smile to a face or two!

keep the suggestions coming please...
