My dh and I used to drive to Aberdeen on a very regular basis from down south so I got to know what places to look out for as to how much further we had to go.

OK, I feel the need to justify myself here...there are bits of south west scotland that are south of bits of north east england.
I was kind of expecting a 'trick' in the question, like the fact that Edinburgh is west of carlisle....

....I am a little disoriented by those who believe Bristle to be north of Oxford. I drove to Oxford today, north, and am now unsure if perhaps I went to Bournemouth instead.

Sigh.

...as an aside, I recall being amused by a football chant at a Bristol Rovers vs Plymouth Argyle game some years ago.

...Rovers comitted a foul, causing the Argyle fans to serenade "You Dirty Northern Bastards"

One size fits all if you are from Plymouth, I guess....
