Help. We are off to Devon and Cornwall in 2 weeks time and I'm worried its going to rain for the entire fortnight.

I have been patting myself on the back for booking our main holiday in the UK and thus missing out on the dodgy exchange rate.

We have booked two lovely cottages, the first is Bosinver and then a week in North Devon in a cottage complex with an indoor pool.

But I'm now seriously worried its going to bucket down all the time and we will have a miserable fortnight. Please tell me its going to be ok, its too late to cancel or we will lose the cost of the cottages and the flights.

IME, weather always picks up just as the poor little bleeder have to go back to schoool.

We have just come back from a week in Mullion (SW Cornwall) and it rained.

We went to the Eden Project (fabulous), St Michael's Mount(really lovely), The Seal Sanctuary (good, but pricey) etc. We got the kids (and DH!) wetsuits and they spent ages in the sea, bodyboarding or exploring rock pools.

Yes, the holiday would probably have been slightly more enjoyable if it had been warmer, but we got around it.

We brought lots of toys, colouring, dvds etc for the kids and had lazy mornings and movie time with popcorn in the evenings (after supper at the local pub)

There is so much to do in the South West that as long as you dont give in as soon as the weather is not good enough to go to the beach, you will have a lovely time.

we had fun there despite the rain, it passed over and we hid in the pop up tent holding umbrellas out when it poured and then they went
back in the sea!

Just keep googling till you find long range weather forecast you like ..believe that one

We had 10 days in occasionally dry Devon. Fortunately, it didn't stop ds (4) donning wetsuit and trying surfing for the first time. We also went to Pennywell Farm, took them to the cinema, a local show and tbh if you have a pool on site they'll still have a fab time. Take a list of fab places to eat. Hope you have a great time.

Thanks for the advice folks. We are in apple cottage chasing squirrels.DS is 2 so I'm hoping he will really enjoy the animal feeding, although making sure we had a complex with an outdoor pool doesn't seem so wise now.

I'm just so about the weather, I bought a great book called Devon and Cornwall for Families and there are so many fab things we want to do. We definitely have the Eden project ear marked for a rainy day but never would have thought of The Seal Sanctuary when it is raining.

Monkey sanctuary at Looe is good on a rainy day too.

Seal Sanctuary is ok... all outside though. A little pricey for what you get, but good for a day that is not good enough for the beach.
It is down just past Helston

I sent themildmanneredjanitor a word doc of what to do in North Devon for beginners last week. I'd be happy to pass it on to anyone else braving the soggy north of the county this week.

Oh would you send that to me JudgeNutmeg, that would be really helpful.I will cat you my email address.

I need to do some sun dancing. I was so worried about what the weather would be like for camping this weekend that I completely forgot to keep fingers crossed for our proper hols.

Oh 33k my advice on packing with a 14mth old is do it when they are asleep, and remember the best thing about not going abroad is that they have all the same shops so if you do forget something it is easy to get a replacement.

I think you should be lucky. We went the week before last and it rained, it had rained all the week before and it rained the week after-it appears to be raining this week. It must stop sometime!!

bosinver does have the indoor soft play - no good for the whole day, but if it is very wet it will kill some time while you are there, swim in the rain , the pool is lovely - was too hot when we were there in May.
Eden wouldn't be much fun in the rain, the biomes are a fairly small part of it, most of it is outdoor.

Oh lord I do hope it will stop. We live in Scotland and I didn't know that so much rain existed.

I was in Devon today and it did have 3 big showers, but between showers, we had a ball. Kids loved it, had a blast - it was only a bit of rain.

Oh boy don't come to Devon! It rains all the time. We haven't had a decent bit of weather since we moved here - it's all our fault. Wait until we move somewhere else and take the rain with us, then you can all holiday here with equanimity.

Arrgh Jux, fancy staying in our house in Scotland in September, that way you can take your nasty old rotten bad weather with you.

I'd love to come to Scotland! Actually, we're in East Devon so if you're going to the North you'll probably be OK, unless we decide to go there at the same time. I'll try to make sure we don't, but we were planning on camping some time this 'summer' and have so far chickened out.

i feel for you, as it's your hols, but i do think it's going to cheer up a abit.

I live in devon, and i can see that the holiday makers are trying thier best in this freakish weather. It's been a miserable school hols for the dc's.

We went to cornwall and stayed near Padstow in July and even though we had non stop rain for 2 days and showers for 3 days ,we still had 2 nice days and on the rainy days we still got out and made the best of it(icluded eating lots).
Last year we stayed in Devon and it rained all week and we had a miserable time so we were determined to enjoy ourselves this year.The thing that made all the difference to us this year(we are going again oct)was that instead of staying in a Self catering cottage like we usually do,this time we stayed on a holiday park(never done before)This made all the difference because even if the weather was rubbish there was still somewhere to take the dd's and entertainment and something to do of an evening.
