Merseyrail BANNING EBIKE even legal ones

I thought I would come on here all the parents know that on the first of January 2027 electric bikes THAT DONT FOLD will be BANNED from the merseyrail network.....Just so were clear that means any e bike that doesn't fold...your Haibike,Cube,Carrera,Voodoo the list goes on.

How your children get to school, get to the sports centre, get into town...the list goes on its absolutely UNACCEPTABLE.

They've given outrageous reasoning complete nonsense, the real reason is they don't want to train staff to tell the difference between an e-bike that is legal and one that is for example bought from eBay... they want to save money at the expense of people in Liverpool in general.

Now that people that says a good thing.... what about the loss revenue from bike shops? what about the lost revenue from maintenance of electric bikes ? What about parts ?what about the employment of those people the list goes on....

I just thought everybody should know if you go out buying electric bikes for Christmas

How did people cope before the e-bike? What distance are the having to travel to need one?

All non folding bikes banned from London trains during rush hour and all electric bikes banned from trains and stations due to battery safety fears.

Really there should be a basic driving license required to ride an ebike (one which could be revoked for unsafe and inconsiderate riding). There's no reason not to regulate the riding of them similar to the old 49cc mopeds, because that's essentially what they replaced. You wouldn't expect to take them on a train.

I would ban them due to the fire risk from the batteries there could be a real disaster if one of them goes off in a train. Having one in your house is a big risk.

Sounds reasonable. You can't take a car, a motorbike, a horse, a light aircraft, a ballon with basket on a train. Trains are really for people, right?
Suggest you calm your jets really. They are perfectly entitled to do this. You are not entitled to take any damn thing you like on a train just because it's a legal item elsewhere.

Sensible decision. So many of these bikes are inherently dangerous because of the cheap batteries. You really think they should employ staff to do a safety inspection on all bikes to ascertain which ones might be risky to passengers?

As a resident of the Merseyrail area I fully support the decision!

My toddler nearly got ran over by an e bike on the pavement (actually very close to a Merseyrail station) and the speed he was going could have been awful and so I think they should be banned everywhere too.

Liverpool is fucking flat! Why do you need an e bike?

Surely if they are taking the train then the biking element is small - just use a normal
one. Or just, you know, use the e-bike to get where you are going.

Isn’t the whole point of an e-bike that you can get from A to B without having to rely on public transport? Who are these school kids that need to travel so far to get to school that they have to use both an e-bike and a train? Also, why should someone with a bike take up the space of 3 passengers on a train and pay for only 1? Want to take your bike, buy another ticket!

I can’t understand why anyone would be against this. Surely your children wouldn’t be able to get to school, sports centres or in to town on the train if the trains were crammed with e-bikes.

Like some other posters, I’d like e bikes banned completely. My mums friend was run over by one on a narrow path where he couldn’t get out of the way. He was in hospital for months. People should have to pedal their own bikes.

I thought most rail networks had already banned them due to the fire risk? When I lived somewhere with a tram/local rail network the only bikes allowed were folding ones in a case.

We've had several fires locally caused by ebike batteries. No idea how easy it would be to distinguish between safe and unsafe bike batteries so it makes far more sense to ban them completely.

Can’t get the anger! Surely if it’s that important buy a standard bike I mean what sort of distances are they doing on the way to school/leisure centre. And really how many jobs realistic will this effect

Southeastern don't allow any type of non-folding bike on the busiest peak time services and don't guarantee that you can take a non-folding bike on any train, if it's crowded. That's been their policy for a long time, before e-bikes were heard of.

You are worried about how children get to school - how many children use an e-bike AND train? Where I live (London) you can't take a non-folding bike on at rush hour, as they take up too much space. People generally leave the bike at the station. I get that's irritating if you want to use it both ends, but why should one person take the space of about 4 when it is busy?

Children shouldn't be riding ebikes, they should be peddling for a start and ore importantly ebikes are dangerous. I nearly got hit by one the other day, the rider had ignored the 'riders dismount' sign on a narrow walkway, the bike had a ridiculously long stopping distance and narrowly missed squashing me, luckily I was able to climb out the way on a railing but that wouldn't have helped a baby in a pushchair or an elderly person.

Excellent news, let’s hope other networks follow suit. E bikes are dangerous. In my city they’re an absolutely menace.
