Merseyrail BANNING EBIKE even legal ones

I thought I would come on here all the parents know that on the first of January 2027 electric bikes THAT DONT FOLD will be BANNED from the merseyrail network.....Just so were clear that means any e bike that doesn't fold...your Haibike,Cube,Carrera,Voodoo the list goes on.

How your children get to school, get to the sports centre, get into town...the list goes on its absolutely UNACCEPTABLE.

They've given outrageous reasoning complete nonsense, the real reason is they don't want to train staff to tell the difference between an e-bike that is legal and one that is for example bought from eBay... they want to save money at the expense of people in Liverpool in general.

Now that people that says a good thing.... what about the loss revenue from bike shops? what about the lost revenue from maintenance of electric bikes ? What about parts ?what about the employment of those people the list goes on....

Fire hazard. Transport for London have already banned them but compliance isn't 100%, hence incidents like this occur:

This is so true.

A regular ebike is no more dangerous than any other bike. They just allow old ladies like me to cycle (slowly) uphill if I pedal hard enough.

One day you will be old, and possibly disabled, and you too might like a little assistance with daily activities.

Why does a child need an e-bike?

None folding bikes and especially bulkier bikes are a menace on trains. As PPs have said many networks don't allow them.

On a legal one you do. If I don’t pedal mine it doesn’t go anywhere! It’s electric assist. The electric also cuts out at 15.5mph and it’s just a normal bike above that speed. My husband is decent cyclist and regularly goes for rides where his average speed is above 15.5mph, should he be banned from cycling for being too fast?

Sorry to hear about your friend but it sounds like he was hit by an illegal ebike if it wasn’t being pedalled, not sure if that means legal ones should be banned.

i can see why they aren’t allowed on trains, though in my mind that should just be all bikes nothing to do with electric just because of space.

I am appalled at how many of my children’s friends are allowing them to ride e-bikes and e-scooters my children are desperate for them but I’m holding firm. They are a hazard to life.

There are serious issues around e-bikes, I think train and bus companies are right to ban them due to the fire risks.
Plus there's the insurance aspect, and high speeds, and lack of any licence for what is effectively a moped.

Regular bikes should be allowed on trains, in the designated spaces.

My dad is old and disabled. E bikes and E scooters are regularly a nightmare for him trying to get around!

tbh I would think as a society we’d be better off concentrating on the drivers killing on the pavements first and preventing that, before turning our attention to lesser threats

its literally a war on pedestrians out there and the biggest killer are drivers of cars

Well, the old gentleman I mentioned had plenty of help with daily activities for two months in hospital when he was knocked to the floor by an e-bike.

I haven’t noticed any old and disabled people on e-bikes and scooters.

A child doesn't need a ebike. If the commute is that far they probably need to change to a more local school.

There are pedal assist ebikes and electric motorbikes. Ebikes need to be pedalled in exactly the same was a standard bike. Motor assist cuts out at 15.5 mph. No pedalling= go nowhere. Reputable brands have quality batteries. Cheap bikes can have battery issues. Pedal assist is great to give you the oomph to get up hills, particularly for ..ahem..older cyclists who knees are starting to protest.
They are no more dangerous than a ordinary bike for pedestrians. Electric motorbikes are the problem. Usually ridden by teenagers or adults who ignore laws.
A lot of railways already restrict full size ebikes of all descriptions. I looked into taking my pedal assist to go touring. The plan was to take train to point A, cycle tour to point B, get train home. I'll be taking car instead and do a circular route.

Bikes are heavy. If you're old and disabled, how are you getting them on and off trains?

I can see they have value for some people. I'm not sure those people are taking them on trains.

I’m disabled and have a legal ebike which I use to commute to work. Very occasionally if I’ve been too tired to ride back or the weather has been awful I’ve caught the train back with the bike. It’s fully road legal, my average speed on my commute on a tow path is 12mph.
