No trains from London!

Going to an event in the excel centre in London in March. I've just gone to book train tickets to discover there are no trains from Euston that Sunday due to strikes. Apparently there "may" be trains nearer the time but they can't guarantee this. Coaches don't work out with the times of the event (and would take 8 hours) – I'm screwed aren't I?! I live too far away to drive and in any case have booked a central London hotel

Where are you coming from could you fly?

I sympathise though, rail travel in this country is the pits.

MumonabikeE5 · 06/01/2025 22:14

Get a Monday morning train, and enjoy another day in London?

Needmorelego · 06/01/2025 22:15

By March they might not be striking.
Where's your starting point? You might be able to travel on a different train company (ie Chiltern from B'ham to Marylebone instead of B'ham to Euston).

Katisha · 06/01/2025 22:16

Is it just avanti trains that are affected? You might be able to get a London northwestern train - where are you coming from?

I am wondering that but I'm a teacher so can't book a day off work.

Travel across to the east coast mainline and arrive into Kings Cross

I'm not sure if it's just Avanti - I will look as could possibly drive from another station if I can get a train to somewhere

Sorry, the opposite way I realise it's going home that's the issue

Ted27 · 06/01/2025 22:19

It's just Avanti. There are other major stations in London
Where are you travelling from ?

Needmorelego · 06/01/2025 22:19

I will look at that, thanks , starting point is Preston

Yeah look at the east coast, I live in Glasgow but usually take the east coast train from Edinburgh as Avanti are so shite

CornishPorsche · 06/01/2025 22:23

Coach for part of it? Taxi?

stichguru · 06/01/2025 22:24

London KX to Leeds - 2 hours
Leeds to Preston - 2 hours
A bit long winded but do-able?

Needmorelego · 06/01/2025 22:24

It looks like from Preston you could maybe take the Calder Valley Line to Leeds (or another on the route) and then change to the line down to Kings Cross.
(Sorry other way around - as said above ^)

thesaskedminger · 06/01/2025 22:25

Preston - Leeds - London Kings

Sorry, other way round Blush

You can’t reliably travel by train any more on a Sunday in this country. I speak from yesterday’s bitter experience.

Plaoontoona · 06/01/2025 22:26

City of London airport is close to the venue. Or do half way train and half way coach to Stratford station and then DLR /uber to the Excel 😄

RandomMess · 06/01/2025 22:28

You could drive it or drive part of the way.

Needmorelego · 06/01/2025 22:28

@GCAcademic I had the opposite yesterday. A perfectly lovely train journey.
It is random though.....

Snowdropsarelovely · 06/01/2025 22:31

Thanks for the suggestions via Leeds, that could work. So frustrating when it's 2 hours to Preston!!

Thanks for all the responses - much appreciated Smile

I'd drive over the M62 to Leeds, leave the car there and go train from Leeds to Kings Cross then the reverse on the way home.

Bumcake · 06/01/2025 22:38

These strikes get cancelled all the time.

PrimitivePerson · 06/01/2025 22:38

I'd be very surprised if the dispute isn't resolved by then. Just keep an eye on what's going on and don't do anything until a bit nearer the time.
