Recommendations for nice (5*) hotels north of England/Borders

I’m looking for somewhere to go for a couple of nights. North of England/Borders. Ideally not Yorkshire or the Lake District.

I want 5*, nice restaurants, pool (spa possibly).

I seem to be going round in circles and still haven’t booked anything after two weeks of browsing. Nothing is standing out.

I'd recommend stobo. It's bloody beautiful!

Contigo · 20/10/2024 10:30

Thanks, @peterrabbitontvagain , I don't fancy Stobo, have looked at it before. I'd like a really nice restaurant (two/three rosettes/michelin star sort of thing) and I don't think the food there looks like what I'm after.

Schloss Roxburghe

Derwent Manor Hotel, Consett, Co. Durham. Fabulous food, pool, jacuzzi, gym, bars, and the glorious Durham dales.

MacDonald Linden Hall, Morpeth. Beautiful spa, jacuzzi, pool, gym, gorgeous food, lovely grounds, not far from Newcastle.

Rockliffe Hall has a spa and an excellent restaurant (run by a chef who held 2 Michelin Stars at his previous establishment). There's also a Michelin Highly Commended pub very close by

Contigo · 20/10/2024 12:33

Thank you.

@throwaway199 I've never actually stayed at Rockliffe because I am close enough to go for the afternoon/day and I have friends in Hurworth (also know the pub well 😃).

Seaham Hall was lovely when we were there.

GoAndAskDaddy · 21/10/2024 23:08

Matfen Hall?

Stayed at linden hall a couple of years ago. Absolutely horrible. Stank of damp. Food mediocre at best.

That is surprising but then the last time I went was 2021. It seems it must have gone downhill since then. Very sad.

Seaham Hall

peanutbuttertoasty · 21/10/2024 23:38

It’s Yorkshire but grantley hall

Contigo · 22/10/2024 01:41

Have you been to Seaham @tigerbear ? It’s on my list. I’m interested to know about the dining.

I live too close to Grantley to consider staying there. We eat there now and then, birthdays, Mother’s Day, the odd function. That’s the sort of thing I’m looking for in terms of dining.

Sorry have just scrolled up, will look at Matfen Hall too.🙏

Fair enough!!

peanutbuttertoasty · 22/10/2024 15:13

How long would you drive for? It’s not borders so probably way too far but Gleneagles looks lovely!

tigerbear · 22/10/2024 19:04

@Contigo yes, have been a few times, albeit not for a few years. The food was very good last time I went.

Contigo · 22/10/2024 19:05

It’s a bit far for what I want, but Gleneagles is lovely, was my first trip after COVID.

So I'm a North Eaat spa snob (self confessed!)
Seaham has the best spa and the food is pretty good Rockcliffe best food second best spa, Matfen I think has just been given a fifth starand is very nice. Linden Hall, Derwent Manor are both fine but not on the same luxury Ball park as Seaham/Rockcliffe/Matfen. Durham Ramside has a good Spa but the food isn't the greatest and I have never stayed over.

Contigo · 22/10/2024 19:21

Thanks 🙏, Linden and Derwent are not what I’m looking for.

I think I’d rather have the food I want (chef’s table/tasting menu type job) than a five star spa on this break.

clareykb · 22/10/2024 19:49

So we have had the tasting menu at Rockcliffe and it was amazing that restaurant isn't open daily though I don't think (Tera I think it is called now think it's Wed to Sat maybe)

Gorgonemilezola · 22/10/2024 19:55

Cringletie is lovely food wise but no spa.
Greywalls?

Contigo · 22/10/2024 20:07

Thanks but I don’t want to stay at Rockcliffe, it’s close enough that I go there and back in an afternoon.

Thank you @Gorgonemilezola.

The food at Seaham was lovely but not Michelin star lovely. If food is priority what about the Swan at Oldstead?

Contigo · 23/10/2024 04:04

Too close to home @MsAnnFrope . I don’t want Yorkshire, I live here, hence my OP. I go into an office in York twice a week
