What's the absolute minimum to take for a one night trip?

I am catching a train, one night in a hotel, checking out and will spend the day at a conference then train home. I will be carrying everything with me.

I am terrible at travelling light. What's the absolute minimum you've ever taken on an over night trip to survive?!

Toothbrush and a pair of spare knickers.

As it's a conference, though, you probably also need spare socks, a fresh top, deodorant and a hairbrush.

GreenSmithing · 22/09/2024 19:16

Absolute minimum? Clean underwear, clean top, clean socks. Toothbrush, comb, deodorant. Phone charger.

Assuming the hotel has toiletries.

Normally I'd take more than that though!

Littletreefrog · 22/09/2024 19:16

Well the minimum I've taken for a one night trip is my toiletries and a spare pair of pants. You will at least need some clothes for the conference. So toiletries, spare set of clothes for the conference. That should do it.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 22/09/2024 19:17

1xpjs
1xconfrence outfit
Skin care
Day to day make up
Hair straightener, brush and clip
Travel toiletries

Would probably try and make it so travel shoes were appropriate for conference outfit

MultiplaLight · 22/09/2024 19:17

Toothbrush, hair brush, charger and pants.

SailingOnAWave · 22/09/2024 19:18

Just to add, we don't have to be smart looking for the conference.

I'd only take a small rucksack (the same size I'd take for a day out with kids).
Toiletries
Undies
Phone charger
Book

I'd try to wear something like a cotton dress that I know I can wear two days without getting smelly.

All this.

Do not overestimate the importance of a spare conference outfit. I’ve been in a situation where I’ve stained an important outfit and you really don’t want to be faffing around with hotel cleaning/dry cleaners at hotel. You can though remove a stain by using washing up liquid and letting it sink in then hand wash.

As it’s a hotel they’ll have shampoo etc there but if you’d like a bath or have hair needs (lotions and potions) you can buy travel ones of these or get freebies in magazines.

I usually prefer a change of shoes too but you can make do with one pair.

I went to Norway for one night with small toiletries bag, one clean shirt, underwear, light pjs and an iPad and phone, plus chargers and small notebook and pen. Had light weight mac I could stuff in flight bag. Did lots of walking around with it all and it was fine.

MiddleAgedDread · 22/09/2024 19:21

Travel in something comfy that packs small and the shoes you’ll wear to the conference. Take PJs, clean undies and a change of clothes for the next day (I always feel grubby if it’s a long train journey so would want clean clothes) and basic toiletries and any make up you need. Once you’ve slept naked in a hotel and the fire alarm has gone off you don’t travel with PJs ever again ;)

MokkaLotta · 22/09/2024 19:22

As above plus USB charger and earbuds for the train.

SailingOnAWave · 22/09/2024 19:23

It's annoying being a contact lens wearer and having to carry that stuff around too.

I'm thinking one set of clothes that can be rolled up small. One light pair of PJ's. Also need razor and travel body wash/shampoo.

Then clean top, knickers and toothbrush. Charger. That's it.

SailingOnAWave · 22/09/2024 19:24

Also a battery charger.

Thanks guys, I'm seeing that it can be done!!

If it’s a hotel that provides towel and toiletries including toothbrush and paste, and and warm enough to wear shoes that don’t require socks, and you are happy to sleep naked, and you aren’t restricted in what you wear to travel then

deodorant
knickers
clean top to go with trousers and jacket / jumper you wore to travel
phone charger (tho hotel may be able to lend)

SailingOnAWave · 22/09/2024 19:25

Oh yes the earplugs!
And a notebook and pen!

You really don’t need travel body wash or shampoo. If you’re in a hotel they’ll provide this.

Some small independent chemists sell shampoo sachets.

DoublePeonies · 22/09/2024 19:26

Clean top and pants
PJs
Hairbrush
Toothbrush & toothpaste
Deodorant
Soap
Phone & charger
Kindle
Wallet

If you need it, eye mask too and if you have trouble dropping off also lavender oil.

MiddleAgedDread · 22/09/2024 19:27

Get yourself some travel size toiletries or the small bottles you can refill with your own products, they’re invaluable for short trips!

Suppose there’s a fire drill in the middle of the night?! Bring night wear.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 22/09/2024 19:28

You need a razor, for 1 night? 🤔

TizerorFizz · 22/09/2024 19:28

@SailingOnAWave A change of clothes! Should you spill something on your clothes it’s wise to have a spare set, Change of shoes probably not necessary but pants and socks are. Phone etc are what you would take to work. Toiletries and perfume! I just have a Le Pliage tote or use the bag that fits on my larger case. Both light and discreet.

SailingOnAWave · 22/09/2024 19:29

Yep I have the travel toiletries, my contact lens solution can only buy as a 250mls bottle (I'm allergic to all in one stuff). It's such a pain.
