What's the absolute minimum to take for a one night trip?

I am catching a train, one night in a hotel, checking out and will spend the day at a conference then train home. I will be carrying everything with me.

I am terrible at travelling light. What's the absolute minimum you've ever taken on an over night trip to survive?!

I recently realised that rather than PJs it's much easier to pack a 'nightie'. In my case just a very lightweight t-shirt dress.

Spare pair of pants, toothbrush /toothpaste.

Surprised no one would take a spare pair of trousers? Especially after a day of travel.

I think it's because you asked about the absolute minimum people would take.

Would I pack a spare pair of trousers for a standard overnight work trip away? Yes, I usually do.

If I could only take the absolute minimum, then no I wouldn't.

It's also quite gendered, isn't it? I don't think anyone would be surprised by a man wearing the same suit two days in a row, on a work trip and only changing a shirt.

I've been evacuated a few times from hotels (false alarms but full evacuation) in the middle of the night.

I normally travel for work with a small cabin wheely bag for all my clothes (tiny Primark one) and my work things in my Samsonite backpack. I only had the backpack for this weekend trip. The wheely is often only half full.

Plenty of gents just have a clean shirt and wear the same suit - and as I generally wear a different vibrant colour top under my jacket, and different jewellery, I also don't need a full change of trousers and jacket and shoes.

My travel toiletries are honed from years of travelling, a lot by air, so using small sizes. Muji do good small bottles and tubes - I tend to use 30ml rather than 100ml ones for overnights.

I should have added - bed attire is important because I have been evacuated in a hurry a few times and standing on streets for 30 minutes before returning to my room.

And usually, for conferences or regular meetings, there is somewhere to leave a wheely bag securely for the day, separate to my work papers/laptop bag carried with me.

Absolute minimum? Clean underwear, clean top, clean socks. Toothbrush, comb, deodorant. Phone charger.

Assuming the hotel has toiletries.

Normally I'd take more than that though!

This is what I take I used to take more but got less over the years

Plus a nightie, if there is a fire I won't care what I wear
