Good evening MN Smile

We're off to York in the New year (two nights) and wondering if anyone has recommendations for the following ... excellent yet reasonably priced -

Chinese restaurant
Italian restaurant
Coffee shops
I've also heard there are good ghost walks of an evening and we'd love to do something like that.

We are staying at the Hampton by Hilton York Piccadilly if that helps.

Thanks anyone for ideas and wishing you and your loved ones a very happy Christmas 😊

It's not exactly what you've asked for, but there's a lovely Thai restaurant called Tah Tien on North Street just next to the river! We also went to the Botanist when we were there and it was lovely!

Sidebeforeself · 24/12/2023 18:11

I wouldn’t second the Botanist - just a chain. Star Inn The City is lovely but not Chinese/Italian. I cant think of a decent Chinese Im afraid . People rate Lucias Italian but thats a chain too. Do walk around the Minster - amazing when you see it for the first time. Also a walk around the city walls

CormorantStrikesBack · 24/12/2023 18:11

Again not what you’ve asked for but I had a great lunch at Cut and Craft.

svenandmolly · 24/12/2023 18:13

Brew and brownie for coffee shop, it's popular though!

MermaidEyes · 24/12/2023 18:16

Ask Italian in the Grand Assembly Rooms is lovely, great food and cocktails. There are ghost walks, there's also a ghost bus tour which is fun and different if the weather's not so great.

MermaidEyes · 24/12/2023 18:17

And of course Bettys Tearooms for breakfast. Don't be put off by the queue, it goes down pretty quickly.

60schild · 24/12/2023 18:28

Marzano on Fossgate for Italian.

Thanks folks I'll have a look at these Grin

Delrio's is a lovely Italian cellar restaurant that's been under the same ownership for decades. Always great food and atmosphere.

tillyandmilly · 24/12/2023 19:03

Definitely Betty’s!

FortyFiveVinyl on Micklegate for amazing toasties.

QueSyrahSyrah · 24/12/2023 19:05

Mad Alice's Bloody Tour of York is fantastic. I've done a few ghost walks there over the years and she was fat and away the best.

I’d second this.

FortyFiveVinyl on Micklegate for amazing toasties.

Love it there

Catinawhirl · 24/12/2023 19:11

We recently stayed in that hotel, it was lovely. Went to Star in the City, felt it was a overrated but might have been our food choice. Enjoyed Ate O'clock.

Dearover · 24/12/2023 19:14

Valentino's on Blossom St is a classic

Namechangedone · 24/12/2023 19:24

Chinese restaurant - the Orchid, vegan which might not be your cup of tea but it's amazing.
Italian restaurant - Trinacria
Coffee shops - North South, Remedy, Rise, The old york tea room

We moved to York a while ago and these are the best finds so far!

PinkMimosa · 25/12/2023 20:39

DS recommends Gatehouse for Coffee.

whada · 25/12/2023 20:41

I can recommend decent pubs if you fancy 😊

whada · 25/12/2023 20:43

Oh, the food pop up in Brew York. Yuzu, Asian street food. Fab.

covetingthepreciousthings · 25/12/2023 20:49

If you're there for 2 days you could also nip on the train to Knaresborough - there's lovely coffee shops there and a nice walk round the castle too to see the viaduct, walk by the river. It's only 30-40 mins away on the train.

wineandmaltesershappyme · 25/12/2023 20:55

Marzano's is lovely.
A bunch of us like Red Chilli on George Hudson St.
Brew and Brownie for coffee, there are a lot of independent coffee shops though.

TalkingInTheKitchen · 25/12/2023 21:06

Marzanos is always good choice, authentic food and great atmosphere.

LunaNorth · 25/12/2023 21:07

Delrio’s on Micklegate for Italian.
Red Chilli on George Hudson Street is supposed to be good for Chinese.
So many options for coffee and cake - Mannion’s on Blake Street; Fossgate Social; Partisan or Brew and Brownie or VinylCafe on Micklegate are all good.
