Anyone have any bright ideas how to get from the NE of England to Falmouth in Cornwall

The train involves two changes and is about a 9 hour journey

We could fly to Truro but then it's a 3 hour train journey to Falmouth from there

We're going to have to drive aren't we? Which is going to be about 8 hours

Just wanted to check I'm not missing anything obvious - like maybe flying to France and swimming, that might be easier

Flybe's website for Newc to Exeter. Put your dates in and see what fares come up (the further away, the cheaper!)

Thanks gladbag, couldnt find those on the newcastle airport site, will have a look at the times now

Weekend flights in Aug are still only £1.09 per head (plus taxes etc of course)

You can't beat it really.

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2008 11:05

No you're right thanks I wasn't looking that far. Would be nice not to have to be changing etc but I'd have to consider whether I could sit next to DH that long without killing him!

hmm if she's not getting married until 3, say (I don't actually know yet ) then the flight arriving in newquay at 12 would be perfect and then taxi
well this has given me ideas other than driving [shudder] thanks

We drive and always stop over (Taunton Travelodge - height of sophistication). That's North-West to the Lizard - it's just too far to do in one day with children. You think you're nearly there when you get to Somerset but that last stretch through Devon and Cornwall is a killer and much better after a night's sleep.

Having said that, Taunton Travelodge was pretty grim last summer so this summer we're trying out a premier holiday inn instead. This one

myrrhthamoo · 02/01/2008 11:15

Ah, more posts - didn't realise it was a wedding. You won't want to stop over on the way there and the way back then. Flying sounds best to me too.

I just put on some hypothetical dates for both routes and I am very cross with Flybe.

Fares for 4 £4.36 each way.

"Taxes and surcharges" for 4, £70 going, £145.20 coming back - WTF????

(Total £223.92)

Air Southwest, Newc-Newq

Fares for 4 £100 each way.
Tax for 4 £40 each way.

(Total £280)

Air Southwest's fare tables quote proper prices including all charges - ie £35 per head. Flybe just say £1.09 and then shaft you with "surcharges".

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2008 11:42

I'm always suspicious of these cheap deals, I wish they'd just give you the full price upfront!
Thanks for lookign though, do you fancy a job as my PA?! I can pay some lovely peanuts!

OP posts:
WendyWeber · 02/01/2008 11:50

Oh yes please, I love peanuts

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2008 11:54

only £111 for 2 of us though
That's not too bad at all

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2008 11:55

Wow and with the bargain I've saved on my PA I think I'll upgrade to 1st class
[head in the clouds]

WendyWeber · 02/01/2008 12:00

No, it isn't bad at all - but I think I'd pay the extra £30 and fly to Newquay, to cut out the 2-hour car journey the other end.

So will you go down on Sat morning and come back on Sun? I hope the wedding is in the afternoon!

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2008 12:12

yeah I've just come to the same conclusion! It also gives us longer to get to Newcastle airport in the morning
Am desperately hoping the wedding is at 3!!
