Anyone have any bright ideas how to get from the NE of England to Falmouth in Cornwall

The train involves two changes and is about a 9 hour journey

We could fly to Truro but then it's a 3 hour train journey to Falmouth from there

We're going to have to drive aren't we? Which is going to be about 8 hours

Just wanted to check I'm not missing anything obvious - like maybe flying to France and swimming, that might be easier

Can you fly Newc to Exeter?

WendyWeber · 02/01/2008 10:38

Or is that even further from Falmouth? (Bit shaky on Cornish geog here!)

WendyWeber · 02/01/2008 10:38

And then hire a car or were you planning to do without one altogether?

WendyWeber · 02/01/2008 10:38

[totally uselsss]

WendyWeber · 02/01/2008 10:41

When will you be going? I just looked at Flybe's website and they are doing £1.09 flights in July!!!

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2008 10:41

ooh will look into exeter thanks
we could hire a car I suppose, were hoping to manage without one at all
actually if we're hiring a car I suppose we could fly to Truro after all, it's only 25 miles, not sure why the trains are so bad
Thanks - you've given me more options to consider..

We drove I'm afraid. Try going through the night so kids are asleep! Or have an overnight stop with soemthing interesting to see, like Cheddar Gorge or something. My family are in glos/wilts so I guess I'm used to the first 5 hours or so of the journey, but cornwall is ages away. If you fly to Truro you coudl hire a car there - Falmouth isn't 3 hours by car

inamerrymuckingfuddle · 02/01/2008 10:42

oops, crossed posts!

tiredemma · 02/01/2008 10:43

cant you fly to newquay?

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2008 10:43

exeter is 100 miles away, but can fly direct from Newcastle
Truro is much closer but I think the flight might be a pain
hmmmmmmmmmm
or do we just drive and save ourselves all this stress?

You can't fly to Truro (did you mean Exeter?), but you can to Newquay Airport, and then it's about a £40 taxi ride to Falmouth (only takes about 45 mins).

Where are you coming from? If you can get a train to Redruth, again it's about a 45 minute taxi ride to Falmouth. There are certainly some direct trains without changes from Newcastle to Redruth...., but I don't know where abouts you are in the NE. HTH

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2008 10:44

te thanks I knew I'd looked at something else, can fly to newquay from edinburgh maybe

Nearest airport is Newquay - flights from Newcastle and Leeds Bradford - here

Or Exeter airport, 2 hours to Falmouth by road. I'd fly and hire a car if you can avoid it; I drive Leeds -> Exeter quite regularly with ds and it's a blinking nightmare.

inamerrymuckingfuddle · 02/01/2008 10:46

you could haven driven to the midlands by the time you've driven to edinburgh, parked and checked in though, hardly seems worth it for a drive the other end too

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2008 10:47

that must have been what I meant gladbag, getting totally confused by all these southern places!
I'm in Durham, might look into train from Redruth, or as you say, a taxi might actuallly be an easier option

Newc to Newq is via Plymouth so could be another horrendously long trip.

E'burgh is direct - how near are you to there though?

If not very I would do Newc-Exeter and hire a car, the trip is 2 hours from there according to google maps.

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2008 10:49

I wouldn't have DS luckily - it would be a nightmare! We're going to a wedding and decided it he would hate every second of the entire trip!
gb, I couldn't find a train direct from Newcastle to Redruth, maybe was looking at the wrong times of day?
its looking like flight + car hire at the moment

OP posts:
tribpot · 02/01/2008 10:54

Looks like the early flight back from Newq to Newc is direct, though? Or there's Brum to Newq direct - quite a drive to get there but a lot less than driving all the way.

gladbag · 02/01/2008 10:56

If you use the trainline website I put in details for Durham to Redruth and it came up with this
so at least one direct train.....8 1/2 hour journey though.....

I think your best bet for an easy journey is flying Newcastle to Newquay, then getting a taxi to Falmouth.

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2008 10:56

do newcastle fly to newquay? can't find it at all
to exeter is looking hopeful

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2008 10:57

Newcastle to Newquay times here

WendyWeber · 02/01/2008 11:00

When is it though, SPB? Those Newq flights don't start until April by the looks.

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2008 11:01

ah sorry should have said - it is august!

gladbag · 02/01/2008 11:02

It may well be me reading it wrongly, but I think if you click view on option 3, the 11.52 train, it says 0 changes. It's all very confusing. You probably need to phone them and actually speak to someone. I hope I haven't confused the matter!
