'Luxury' or quirky hotel stay - ideas please.

This is a treat for my DH's big birthday.

I say 'luxury' - I've looked at a couple of places that I might have chosen, but can't justify £1200-£1400 for two nights B&B.

Quirky, interesting, open to anywhere really but we are in the north. Cornwall for instance, would be a long drive for two nights, but being in the north does give us parts of Scotland as an option (but not a castle...I'm too spooked😳).

Any ideas really appreciated - I'm feeling under pressure...just want to make a lovely relaxed, 'something a bit special' break.

Thank you!

Hampton Manor?

Madcats · 24/01/2022 17:44

Could it be a "cottage" near decent restaurants? Have a look on Cool Stays.

How about the Titanic Hotel in Liverpool?

Hotel Gotham in Manchester is quirky luxury.
The Black Bull in Sedbergh for cosy and great restaurant.
I’d choose a hotel in Edinburgh, not sure which though, too much choice!
What’s inportant to you, food, spa, surroundings?

JamaicaSq · 24/01/2022 18:23

Important to us....relaxation, good scenery...possibly.

My ideas are so far removed from each other. Glamping with family, fire pit, laughs... to highish end city hotel and restaurant.

I'm awful at making decisions....

Some nice hotels in the north that I've been to, but not in the last couple of years for obvious reasons:

Eshott Hall
Wynyard Hall
Farlam Hall
Chester Grosvenor

Or maybe go further north to Scotland? I can recommend these, apart from the one in Edinburgh they are all country house type places:

The Balmoral, Edinburgh
Isle of Eriska
Kinloch House
Kilcamb Lodge

Happy hunting!

Have a look on Canopy & Stars for Glamping ideas.

Malmaison in Oxford is in an old jail. Some of the rooms are former jail cells and are off a corridor which still looks like a jail (but not all rooms are, so check), it's very luxury in a quirky setting.

Brook house woods is beautiful and luxurious! Amazing tree houses and scenery.

SpreadHummusNotHate · 24/01/2022 19:17

Olicana Park near Ilkley, they have some ski lodge style cabins with hot tubs and it’s in a beautiful setting

Landmark trust?

Burgh Island is good fun if you’re looking for something different and special.

I’d also second Canopy and Stars for ideas. The Sawdays site also has some good recommendations, lots of quirky places there with great food.

Burgh Island v cool but expensive! Nearby Thurlestone Hotel is lovely and you can visit Burgh Island via sea tractor(!)

We just spent a weekend in the newly renovated Marine hotel in North Berwick. The decor is a bit kitsch and quirky and it's in a lovely location. They have a nice spa with an outdoor thermal pool which was really nice in the cold weather. Plenty of places to potter around and explore in the area too.

Auntpodder · 24/01/2022 19:25

Tawny Hall might work - it mixes comfortable glamping (huts rather than bell tents) with a restaurant thetawny.co.uk/ - Callow Hall has a similar approach www.wildhive.uk/

lilao · 24/01/2022 19:26

Ty Capel B and B Wales - it has a beautiful bedroom with a bath in it called Clywedog or similar?

It was only £140 a night when we booked it but I think it's usually booked up a year in advance!

filka · 24/01/2022 19:32

Quirky...Legoland Hotel in Windsor, close to Heathrow so fly rather than drive. But it seems pretty busy so need to book quite a long time ahead

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/01/2022 19:34

Buxton Cresent Hotel, with an outdoor, rooftop pool.

Benmac · 24/01/2022 19:40

I was going to suggest The Witchery in Edinburgh but that might be disqualified by no castles?

BluebellsGreenbells · 24/01/2022 20:27

Are you close to an airport?
