'Luxury' or quirky hotel stay - ideas please.

This is a treat for my DH's big birthday.

I say 'luxury' - I've looked at a couple of places that I might have chosen, but can't justify £1200-£1400 for two nights B&B.

Quirky, interesting, open to anywhere really but we are in the north. Cornwall for instance, would be a long drive for two nights, but being in the north does give us parts of Scotland as an option (but not a castle...I'm too spooked😳).

Any ideas really appreciated - I'm feeling under pressure...just want to make a lovely relaxed, 'something a bit special' break.

Thank you!

If you would do self catering then you can stay in Fountains Hall at Fountains Abbey (Rippon). Might be a little bit close to spooky castle but they are gorgeous apartments, not far to get into Harrogate and you have access to the Abbey grounds before / after it's open to the public which is lovely. It's beautiful and very peaceful.

The Peat Inn in Fife

Monachyle Mhor near Callander (might be too far away)

This is a great thread. I am
Making notes for when our teen goes on residential school trips again (and then Uni).

If you do decide to travel as far as Wiltshire these lodges (managed by the Beckford Arms) are gorgeous.

If you don't want to trek to the pub for breakfast, they fill the fridge with everything you need.

Not everybody's cup of tea but we have booked to go to the Crazy Bear hotel - I think there's a couple in the country and that's quite quirky

How about the sky den in Kielder skyden.kielder.co.uk/

Thanks so much, loads to follow up.

Some quick replies - definitely not The Witchery - far to spooky for me, it would freak me out.

Fountains Hall, the same and very close to home. I looked at Grantley Hall - but that was where my £1400 for two nights came from. Luxury, yes - but £££'s that I don't want to spend. I'm not sure the pressure of the cost makes it almost impossible to enjoy, or perhaps it wouldn't live up to expectation.

I'm off to google the other suggestions though.

Some of these suggestions sound great! I'm making notes for when I next (ever) get chance for a child free weekend with DH

OP, have you looked at quirkyaccom.com? They have some fun stuff.

Burgh Island is wonderful, on a tidal island in Devon. 1930’s Art Deco, dress for dinner. Champagne at every turn!

Gilpin hotel in the lakes (near Windermere) - it has 2 restaurants which have very different vibes, but both amazing food.

Fingal, it's a boat on the Leith docks (Edinburgh).

[quote converseandjeans]Have a look on Canopy & Stars for Glamping ideas.

I booked with them for the summer of 2020. Obviously couldn't go because of lockdown. They said we could move foc to 2021 but subsequently ignored all emails.

SummaLuvin · 25/01/2022 16:17

@ReviewingTheSituation I have booked a stay there later this year, a treat for DH and I! If you've stayed can you recommend a particular room to request?

ZiggysPFrow · 25/01/2022 16:32

Also had a terrible experience with Canopy and Stars... The shower cubicle was covered in black mould and had a stained, dirty shower curtain

ReviewingTheSituation · 25/01/2022 17:45

@SummaLuvin - I'm jealous! It was lovely. I can't remember what room we stayed in - we stayed at the main hotel, not the lakehouse. It was a very nice room with a lovely bathroom, I wouldn't have upgraded beyond whatever their entry level room is though. The bed was super-comfy, I remember that much!

Definitely eat in the restaurants - the food was just divine. We wanted the tasting menu, but they weren't doing it then (it was July 2020, and they'd not long reopened after the first lockdown).

Madcats · 25/01/2022 21:20

If OP is still busy investigating, Sunday and Monday nights are usually cheaper.
