Hi, we are going to a wedding in Glasgow in August. We will have a couple of nights there, but would like to stay somewhere near Glasgow for a couple of nights beforehand. We have three children age 8,5 and 1. I don't know Scotland at all, but would love somewhere rural not more than an hour drive from Glasgow centre. Any advise would be very welcome. Thank you.

Loch Lomond every time!

Bryjam · 08/02/2019 20:12

Edinburgh.

Bryjam · 08/02/2019 20:13

Sorry missed the rural aspect Blush

Winifredgoose · 08/02/2019 20:13

Thank you. I have seen Loch Lomomd and the Trossachs national park. Would you go to Loch Lomomd itself or anywhere in that area?

The whole area is nice and you can drive around it easily enough. Not sure what accommodation type you want?

Winifredgoose · 08/02/2019 20:32

I guess either a hotel or a lodge/self catering. I have just had a look and there seem to be loads of places to stay. It looks very beautiful.

Yes, plenty of choice in the Trossachs. It is lovely.

celtiethree · 08/02/2019 21:58

Look at Crief Hydro is at your hour limit but is great for kids and nice and rural

Drogosnextwife · 08/02/2019 21:58

The lodge on loch lomond is apparently lovely. DP and I have been wanting to go for a long time.

Piggywaspushed · 08/02/2019 22:00

Isn't that reeeeealllllllly expensive drogo?

bakingdemon · 08/02/2019 22:07

What's your budget? They Ayrshire coast is lovely - Troon perhaps. The Trossachs near Loch Lomond are good if you want to go walking as people have said.

Drogosnextwife · 08/02/2019 22:12

Yeah I think it is quite expensive but there sometimes deals on when during the quieter months, or so I've been told 🤷‍♀️

thaegumathteth · 08/02/2019 22:14

I’d also recommend the trossachs BUT I’d also say Edinburgh festival will be on in August and my kids have always loved it.

GoGoGadgetGin · 08/02/2019 22:14

Ayrshire!

LondonHuffyPuffy · 08/02/2019 22:17

DH and I stayed in a lovely lodge at Benview Holiday Lodges near Aberfoyle which is about 40 mins from Glasgow, 15 mins from Loch Lomond. It was v cheap but really lovely.

You could go a bit further north and stay in or near Callander. There's hotels or B&bs or nearby strathyre log cabins (forest holidays I think) close by is Stirling where you have Blair Drummond safari park, next to that is briarlands farm which has so much to do, I think it's also a short drive to go ape and probably about 45/60 minutes from Glasgow city centre.
A bit further south you have Dumfries which is good too, and short journey to Gretna and Moffat

GoGoGadgetGin · 08/02/2019 22:40

Or drive down to largs then hop the ferry to Cumbrae?

JRMisOdious · 08/02/2019 22:46

Maybe consider Glasgow itself? It’s fantastic for children, brilliant museums, galleries etc., the majority of which are free.

nooddsocksforme · 08/02/2019 22:52

Inveraray is lovely. Based on loch fyne - maybe just over an hour from Glasgow. There’s an old jail there and other places to visit.
The George hotel does great food www.thegeorgehotel.co.uk/

Alloway is a lovely place. It has culzean castle country park not far away, heads of Ayr farm park which is fab for kods of all ages, the Robert burns birthplace museum.

poppet31 · 09/02/2019 00:05

I would go with Crieff hydro which is about an hour away (Perthshire.) lovely hotel in beautiful grounds with lots to do for kids. Usually do good deals.

Winifredgoose · 09/02/2019 06:41

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions. I will start researching them. It looks like we have lots of options. Thank you so much.
