Has anyone ever stayed in a ONE star Hotel?

Because DH says it will be fun. I am not a wimp but I always thought a one star hotel was a car park.

Ummmm - if I have I have blacked it out of my conscious memory. 3* is usually okay (basic but clean - ....perhaps something like a travel lodge?) and not all that expensive.

Or failing that what about a B&B option?

LIZS · 12/06/2007 14:00

Think we did in Paris once - I'm sure it was a brothel !

oliveoil · 12/06/2007 14:00

link to hotel then we can judge away

I have been backpacking and stayed in some right dumps so have low standards

Fimbo · 12/06/2007 14:00

We went to Malta once, supposedly allocated on arrival.

The apartments they tried to put us into were below even what I would describe as 1*.

Dh & I took one look and refused to stay there for a fortnight, so we were moved into something else probably around a 1 1/2*.

Never ever again, 3* > only for me.

Mind you Malta was shit and nine months later I gave birth to dd, thanks to chronic stomach bug I picked up out there, which rendered the pill ineffective!

One star.... shared toilet down the hall smelling of wee. A handbasin in room if lucky.

we stayed in a 1* hotel in paris and it was pretty dceent for the money. Basic but definitely clean and a new bathroom!

handlemecarefully · 12/06/2007 14:02

I'm not sure how many stars the New York hotel I stayed in a few years ago had, but it came with cockroaches thrown in and was situated above a 'Subway' take out restaurant

slowreader · 12/06/2007 14:02

It is linked to a company that do adventure things like kayaking and climbing for kids. The parents come along and stay in the hut it is supposed to be green but so is grass.
(V thoughtful)

my mistake - just looked it up and it was 2*

MeAndMyMonkey · 12/06/2007 14:04

Yes, in Paris, and yes it was a total dump. A virtual loo if I'm not mistaken.
I am a wimp, but, you know, ewww.
Don't do it, your husband is lying, it will not be fun!

handlemecarefully · 12/06/2007 14:04

Ah, now I have more confidence in the proposed accommodation now I now what it is allied to. I am sure that it will be clean - just very basic

EmeraldGreen · 12/06/2007 14:06

presume 1 is like a hostel? On a school trip to italy we had 4 to a room, very basic but quite nice with a balcony and a bathroom, perhaps that was about 2. I mean, if you are only going to sleep there I guess it will be fine

Lucycat · 12/06/2007 14:07

Yes in Paris also monkeyand LIZS!

It was above a sex shop, the entrance was down an alley but we'd been travelling around Europe out of a tent for 6 weeks by then so it was luxury!

It cost us about 50 francs each a night.

EmeraldGreen · 12/06/2007 14:07

Buy a tent and camp instead maybe?

I sayed in a 2* in Paris when I was 16 - with my mother who chose it for us. It was the cheapest accomodation she could find. She wasn't even hard up. At the time I considered it an adventure, but wouldn't go back. I think the room had 3 single beds, with greying curtains to divide the room. Thinking about it, I'm suprised we weren't bitten by fleas. Fantastic view over the Sein, though.

ChippyMinton · 12/06/2007 14:18

It does breakfast in bed!!! That's go to be worth not having a minibar for.

slowreader · 12/06/2007 14:19

Perhaps the beds are in the kitchen

Slow reader, that link looks brilliant. I'd go. It looks like you'll have a great time.

MeAndMyMonkey · 12/06/2007 14:23

My Paris experience was also some years ago, it looks like a theme is developing. If I could ever afford a hol ever again it would have to be at least 3* and above these days. Wimp, me!
Minibars - overpriced bollox, yes, but how much fun are they? The little bottles and everything?

slowreader · 12/06/2007 14:25

hate minibars such a pain having to tie dcs hands together.
