it was a posh B&B called Shallowdale House near Ampleforth in Yorkshire. The owners are also fab cooks and do a gorgeous dinner (no choice but you tell them in advance if there's anything you don't like).

[[http://www.tresanton.com/ here] It was fabulous, lovely ferry trip over to falmouth, lovely restaurant in the hotel and the local pub did brilliant food too.

Or my other favourite ( i cant decide which i liked the best ) is here
although this one gets slated on here quite a bit because apparently it's full of snobs? I didnt see any the cowshed spa is gorgeous...

Probably the waterside inn, in maidenhead.

CMOTdibbler · 14/07/2010 16:07

We had a lovely couple of days at Percys pre DS

Decorhate · 14/07/2010 16:11

I don't usually rate hotels in the UK - I find then a bit impersonal no matter how lovely, simply because of the huge volumes of people they get through their doors.

I did enjoy this one but it was many years ago

here

here
We (DH and I minus children) stayed here for 3 nights. It was fab, not big and fancy and posh but really fab.
We stayed in the green 4 -poster rom on the homepage

This place in the Peak District was fabulous and is an independent, which made all the difference. Lots of opportunities for country walks, fab spa facilities and just the most gorgeous food! We did the 2 day spa break, and added on an extra night at half price, and was very good value for money as it's effectively full board.

Bailifscourt Hotel. In Climping Sussex. So good we went back 3 more times.

We also had a great time at Maison Talbooth. They are so helpful and welcoming. We had dhs 40th birthday party there which was fab.

Either Cowley Manor or The Compleat Angler

Both were fantastic, great food and good wine lists and lovely staff. At the Compleat Angler we stayed in a suite and it was well worth the money, views over the Thames and a lovely room with a huuuuge bathroom.
Cowley Manor the rooms are all amazing, ours had the bathroom upstairs and a bath big enough for about 10 people

squeaver · 14/07/2010 16:29

Oh yy to Cowley MAnor too.

I REAAALLY want to go away now (wonder if I can leave dh behind??)

BettyButterknife · 14/07/2010 16:30

If you are a foodie, you can't go wrong with Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons, Raymond Blanc's hotel and restaurant in Oxfordshire.

I have a mega soft spot for Burgh Island in Devon, as it's where I got married

izzybiz · 14/07/2010 16:35

Bath Spa

Dh and I satyed here for a few days after our wedding, beautiful city, plenty to see and do, we loved it!

Mirrorball · 14/07/2010 16:36

Babington House - amazing breakfasts, afternoon tea was included and the scones and homemade blueberry jam I still dream about.

Cowley Manor - only the one night but amazing spa treatments

Barnsley House I loved most... laid back and not pretentious at all.... just perfect. Hydrotherapy pool the best I've been to. Aromatherapy Associates treatments are my favourite so I was in heaven. You get a torch to wander down to the village pub/restaurant which is owned by the hotel - a more relaxed menu. The local walks are lovely too.

Enjoy your break!

Alouiseg · 14/07/2010 16:41

I really fancy Babington House but have never got round to going.

Apphia · 14/07/2010 21:07

Another vote for Babington...

runnyhabbit · 14/07/2010 21:11

We stayed here in Feb 2009. Was our first weekend away since having the boys (ds1 was 3, and ds2 was 1) and was lovely

Rooms beautiful, staff friendly, but not over the top, and it was walking distance to York Minster.

Was a wonderful weekend......(apart from a slight squeaky bed)

sailorsgal · 14/07/2010 21:35

DH and I love Babbington. Didn't find it pretentious at all.

We also have been to chewton glen in the New Forest which has a lovely spa.

We want to go to the Limewood also in the New Forest next or Whatley Manor in Wiltshire next.

The Dial House here in Bourton on the Water (Cotswolds) is a favourite of ours. It's not super-posh or super expensive, but the food is fabulous, the service very friendly and it's just got a really nice, cosy feel to it.

FrumpyPumpy · 14/07/2010 21:47

Feversham Arms, Helmsley, N. Yorks.... Mmmmmmmm

LauraNorder · 14/07/2010 21:50

Manor House ay Castle Coombe is beautiful.

Mirrorball · 15/07/2010 14:04

Laura - we've stayed at their sister hotel, Pennyhill Park - spa was totally fab!

My SIL and MIL have stayed at the Dial House - which look gorgeous too.

I love this thread - some brilliant recommendations.
