after a hectic few months just want to get away to a gorgeous hotel, peaceful, want to go on nice walks, eat nice food and relax

can you recommend anywhere please?

Another vote for Le Manoir aux Quatre Saisons. But then my UK country house hotel experience is pretty limited, to be fair.

Agree Le Maison Talbooth is lovely, but haven't stayed overnight, just had various dinners and parties there. Really lovely surroundings/countryside and easy for a quick break from London if you don't want to go too far.

Northcote Manor in Lancashire near Blackburn. Nigel Slater is the chef, beautiful surroundings and gorgeous food.

Inverlochy Castle near Fort William.

Absolutely gorgeous. Cost more than I could ever justify now though!!

Nigel Slater? I thought he was mostly a food writer and presenter/cook. I didn;t realise he was actually a trained chef!

minxofmancunia · 16/07/2010 19:26

Nigel Haworth sorry, don't know where got Nigel Slater from

LongDroopyBoobyLady · 16/07/2010 19:31

Another vote for Babington or Buckland Tout-Saints.

We haven't stayed in many, if any, 'posh' places but did like these two:

Stratford Upon Avon

Harrogate

Isn't Nigel Hawthorn an actor? Who shall we try next - Nigel Havers?

Or Nigel Lawson. At least his daughter is a cook!

FellatioNelson · 18/07/2010 10:29

Sorry - minx, I see you said HAWORTH, not Hawthorn.

Ewe · 18/07/2010 10:32

Another vote for Babington, it's just perfect!

We have been to the Manor House at Castle Coombe too - gorgeous.

Had a very bad exp at the Compleat Angler.

We love Crazy Bear, near Oxford. Rooms are really funky with a bath at the bottom of the bed, amazing restaurant and it's not too wedgy

We loved Bodysgallen Hall. By far the best hotel food and service we have ever had

The Drunken Duck was also a perfect romantic break. The location is utterly gorgeous and everything was fantastic without any trace of pretentiousness.

Tillyscoutsmum · 18/07/2010 10:40

Sorry - forgot Cotswold House

Gidleigh Park www.gidleigh.com/ near Chagford in Devon and Scarlet www.scarlethotel.co.uk/ in North Cornwall, both fabulous for different reasons which I just can't go into in public!
