Yoto Player vs Toniebox vs??

Have been looking at these for our DD 4th bday. Lots of reviews online but they all feel a bit 'influencer'-esque (the type where they're given it for free and only talk about positives). Can't find anything directly comparing them either.

Does anybody have experience of either and ideally a comparison? Are there any alternatives?

Thanks!

Thank for those that have posted the reviews and the referral codes, it helped me choose the Yoto player over Tonies box. I have used one of codes (I think the one posted before the last) and we love our Yoto, got it for our daughter's 5th birthday. Here's my referral code in case someone is also looking for a discount prz.io/gqjde9biO

That was meant to say 'Thank you to those..' Hmm

MeetOllie · 14/03/2021 21:20

Hi! What were the main reasons why you decided to buy Tonie or Yoto?

aisteb · 20/03/2021 09:47

Do you mean why one over the other? Yoto seems to have more longevity, we wanted a player for a 5yo and Tonie box seemed more suitable for someone younger. Also like the extra features of Yoto like the clock, the nightlight, the radio and the podcast.

3rd Yoto broken in 4 months. We bought this for Christmas from my son. First one didn't work out of the box and we were sent a replacement. 2nd one worked just long enough for him to love it (about a month) and then stopped charging. We were sent a replacement which lasted about 2 months. Then all the cards stopped playing correctly. Skipping from chapter to chapter. I've just got in touch with Yoto requesting a full refund for the player and the cards as I'm sick of this now. Toddlers are hard enough to put to bed without having this stress.

aisteb · 13/04/2021 21:23

Oh no :( Our daughter is so happy with hers so far, we love our Yoto. We did have the skipping from chapter to chapter issue when an update didn't load correctly (patchy WiFi where we keep it), contacted the support, left it connected to wifi and they have sorted it out remotely. Been working perfectly the last two months and we keep on saying it's the best gift to any 3-6yo. I hope you just have been unlucky as it's by far the most prised possession of our daughter, she would be devastated if it broke. We found the aftersales support very good, hope you get a refund. A friend's kid has had his Tonies box for quite a while now and it's used daily with no problems, it has less features but might be worth a try if you are looking for an alternative.

We've got the Yoto player and have been very happy with it so far. No issues yet here. Just need to go buy more books...

If anyone is thinking of buying and would like a referral code, here's mine Smile

My discount code for 10% off the yoto is prz.io/pERzrJyFO but this is my pros and cons for the yoto versus the toniebox in my opinion.

Yoto

Pros

Greater selection of content
The cards are very reasonably priced
Not so “babyish” so it will be used for a very long time
Built in radio and daily podcast
Controls for going between tracks is more intuitive
Can be used as a bluetooth speaker
Built in night light
Built in clock
Can be controlled from an app
Can carry it around the house while playing as the card sits inside a slot
Stories are still in your library on the app even if you loose the physical card
Simple pixel display screen so its easier to recognise what track you are on and skip between tracks.
Make your own cards hold a lot of data (500mb and up to 100 tracks)
Yoto tokens scheme

Cons

Feels a bit more delicate and prone to being scratched
The cards are quite small so easily lost
My 3 year old is unable to turn on the on/off button herself so I have to turn it on for her
No forward or rewind function within a track yet

Toniebox

Pros

Padded and feels very robust for small children
Comes in a range of colours
Visually appealing and tactile figurines which could be played with independently of the speaker
Bigger figurines so less likely to be lost
Able to forward and rewind within a track
Cons

The figures are quite babyish so its unlikely to be used as long.
You have to tap the sides to move between tracks and if you tap too hard the figurine goes flying.
No visual to indicate what track you are on.
You cant really walk around the house with it as the tonie falls off the player
Less built in features
The creative tonies can only hold 90 minutes of audio

P.s. that's a shame yours have broken @ @klumvart. We've had ours for nearly a year and they've been great with no problems so that's really bad luck Sad

This thread really helped me make my mind up, we've gone with Yoto for longevity and I used the last referral code posted above me 😊

This is my referral code if anyone else is looking to make a purchase: prz.io/l5ENN4YFA

girlmama32 · 29/06/2021 23:43

I've been trying to decide between these for my daughter for her second birthday, does anyone have a child of this age with either?
I was swaying towards the tonie as the yoto player looked to be for older children but I'm not sure if we'd just be better forgetting about it this year and getting a yoto next year instead as we'd probably get more use from it.

PigsEnigma · 01/07/2021 10:20

We have a Yoto for my son. He's had it for about a year now and it's the best money we've ever spent. Used daily and loved by all of us. We enjoy the podcasts and the radio is pretty good too!

@girlmama32 whilst my son is nearing 5yrs I also have a daughter and I will be buying her one for her second birthday. Yoto have recently bought out a silicone 'adventure jacket' for the yoto and just makes it a bit more drop friendly.

If you do decide to go for one I have a referral code for 10% off...

Girlmama32 We got a second Yoto for our young son, he's not even one yet but he got used to one of the sleep sounds on the Sleep sounds card (highly recommend it, our 5yo uses the nature sounds to fall asleep and the baby loves the soundscape track). Initially I was playing his sister's card on the Yoto app and now he will only sleep with that as the background, his sister won't share her Yoto and I wanted my phone back. We got the silicone jacket and I imagine he will start operating the player himself from quite young.

The silicone jacket is great, will get another one for our eldest as recently she's started using her Yoto on trips with headphones, the novelty of headphones was such that she lasted a whole 2hr journey entertained with that alone.

I initially thought the cards were quite stiff to put in and out, but not sure if that's something that improves with use or whether we just got a knack for it now but they slide in smoothly and I think he will be able to slot them in himself from 2yo if not younger.

Our daughter loves the podcast and the radio so we don't need to buy many cards, we also have a ten pack of diy cards and have recorded music, family reading stories etc.

We have had it for nearly a year and it gets a lot of use daily, still working absolutely fine.

Here's the 10% off Yoto discount code from our second purchase prz.io/gqjde9biO if anyone needs it.
