If you want to buy him a book, he might enjoy Terry Pratchett's Bromeliad or Johnny trilogies.

My DS is 8 as well this summer. His reading is not good so I am buying story CDs - famous 5 and HP - 1st book only (that is still 8 CDs!). DS doesn't have great motor skills so I have also bought a great catching game from Hamleys.
