I think my holiday cottage is haunted

The dog won’t settle. She’s been with us for many U.K. cottage holidays and she makes herself st home within about 20 minutes. We’ve been here for 3 days.

The cottage is 1700s and there is a freezing cold patch whereas the rest of the cottage is cosy warm.

Things have been flying off the kitchen counter.

Last night I felt the duvet move like a hand run down my leg which wasn’t a) DH b) the duvet moving when one of us was turning over.

There’s now a howling gale outside which isn’t helping.

Are you near Penzance? We stayed in a cottage I believed to be haunted when the kids were little.

saladofthemassive · 09/02/2026 18:44

You need to get Danny Robbins on the case ;)

No, Somerset. What happened in your cottage?

Are you in the Highlands? We stayed in a holiday home there last year that had odd goings on. Agree with pp you need Danny on the case.

On the levels in a wing of a farmhouse with a slate tiled floor?

No, it’s an estate cottage as in stately home not council.

Ooh, we were sitting in the living room and someone walked past the window. They never walked back. The cottage had a strange arrangement. The sitting room was at the back. There was a big wall all around the garden and there was absolutely no way you could leave without passing the sitting room window. It also had cold spots, the dog didn't like it, footsteps overnight. The person walking past the window was the thing that really unnerved us though. Ugh. We were glad to leave.

Sorry, have failed to work out how to say which post I am responding to.

@JuliaSeesHer the house we stayed in was a old victorian one, the dog refused to go up into the games room which was the old maids room. My nephew and brother swore they heard sweeping at night and a faint womans voice. A few nights lights flickered for no reason. My brother was in the hot tub one night and swore he seen someone at the bedroom window upstairs, when we were all downstairs. Didn't find the house scary or anything and we are planning on going back to stay again.

Ooooooh! I love these threads!

I stayed in place in France once which I'm sure was haunted. It was an old (17th c.) granite farmhouse/manor. I was woken in the night by the sensation that someone was pushing my right leg, mid-thigh and just below the knee, as though they were trying to put me out of bed. The thing is, the right side was pushed up against the wall. I 'spoke' to 'it' in my mind, telling it to leave me alone as I wanted to sleep, and it stopped.

The next morning I discovered the outline of a low door which I hadn't noticed the night before as it was covered in the same (hideous) floral wallpaper as thd wall, right where I'd felt the pushing sensation.

Everyone thought I was crazy, blamed it on night terrors which I had never had previously nor since.

When I told the owner at breakfast she laughed at me. But when the other families had left the breakfast table she came back and said "But I've had strange things happen in the old barn..."

100% believe it was a ghost that wanted me to get out of its way.

I stayed in a Welsh cottage once which made me a little uneasy for no reason. One evening, I saw a shadow move across the hall through the gap under the door. It was probably a car outside but it looked like someone was walking through the hall and it spooked me!

merryandbrightdelight · 09/02/2026 19:41

We stayed in a haunted caravan once. We laugh about it now but at the time it was really unnerving

We stayed in a place in Fishguard once that I swear was haunted. Made me feel so uncomfortable throughout but one room in particular was the worst. Helpfully, it was the room I was sleeping in.

Is the dog comfortable in any of the rooms?

Don't say his name 3 times, he might actually appear.

We stayed in a tiny cottage at Lochcarron. We heard someone coming up the wooden staircase with heavy boots every night and one of the ornaments on the mantelpiece was found on the opposite side of the clock that was there every morning.
When we read the guest book there were lots of reports of happenings, even to people hearing the organ that was there playing by itself during the night. 😬

RoxytheRexy · 09/02/2026 20:14

We stayed in a large holiday cottage in Somerset that was definitely creepy. I’m not woo at all but it had the a terrible feeling to it. There was an old fashioned nursery contained a rocking horse that was freezing, anyone that walked in it said how cold it was immediately. It had a large landing and I bumped into my sister and we simultaneously looked at each and said ‘I hate this house!’
and everything seemed to go wrong. The kids broke a window on the first night, we broke multiple plates/glasses as they all seemed to fall off things or we would drop them. And everyone got ill. I was glad to drive home

I googled the property after and it turned out to be the childhood home of Jacob Rees-Mogg. Which raises more questions than it answers really

I recommend the Uncanny podcasts for anyone interested in this stuff. I don’t recommend the op listen whilst in this cottage, it will really shit you up .

Unfortunately I’ve now ran out of episodes
I’ve been listening to them whilst doing housework but then started listening just before going to sleep which was a stupid idea
