I think my holiday cottage is haunted

The dog won’t settle. She’s been with us for many U.K. cottage holidays and she makes herself st home within about 20 minutes. We’ve been here for 3 days.

The cottage is 1700s and there is a freezing cold patch whereas the rest of the cottage is cosy warm.

Things have been flying off the kitchen counter.

Last night I felt the duvet move like a hand run down my leg which wasn’t a) DH b) the duvet moving when one of us was turning over.

There’s now a howling gale outside which isn’t helping.

@abbeyday were you both in the same room?

@JuliaSeesHer are you still there? has it been okay?

Several years ago we stayed in a remote 17 century cottage in Cornwall. On our last night I woke up terrified, all the hairs on my body were raised, I was sure someone was in the room. It was pitch black and I didn’t dare move. Never experienced anything like it. Casually mentioned it to my husband the next day and was horrified when he said he’d had the same experience.

Which bit of Cornwall? We go there a fair bit…

As a counter-perspective, we stayed in a cottage a couple of summers back that had the most lovely, gentle, friendly ghost. I only saw his shadow but he had such a kind energy. I had a bit of a chat with him on a couple of occasions - I picked up his name and that he'd worked there for many years, and that he just liked to visit because he'd been so happy there and was interested in all the new people coming and going. He didn't do anything spooky and the cottage had a lovely warm, welcoming vibe. I spent a day there on my own with our dog when DH and DS went to an event that wasn't dog friendly and felt completely safe. My dog and I both saw a cat crossing the room a few times but only I encountered the human spirit. I felt genuinely sad to say goodbye to him when we left.

Back home now. I now have an enormous bruise on my arm which I must have clunked my arm very sharply to get such a whopper. But I don’t remember hitting my arm on anything.

@JuliaSeesHer and hopefully nothing whacked you!

Glad you're home safe and sound

Are you going to tell the owner anything about it?

JuliaSeesHer · 15/02/2026 21:53

I think we should email the owners directly and then leave a positive review publicly.

We stayed in a cottage in Whitby years ago, that we felt was haunted. Our friend’s dog was with us and would stare and bark at the same corner, including staying awake at night. I sensed a presence, and I can’t explain how without seeing an actual figure, but I could just tell it was a fisherman wearing one of those wide fisherman’s hats and long waterproof coat. Our baby barely slept that week - tho that was nothing new 😆

Our apartment in Edinburgh on a recent stay was eerie. No actual sightings but I just couldn't settle. Lots of old quirky furniture maybe just spooked me.

Hoping we get more details about the haunted caravan!

@FingalscaveApparently the whole of the third floor is rather 'busy!

I must be a bit of a spud then, stayed on the third floor there three times (two different rooms) and never noticed a thing.
(I'm quite open-minded but do always look for horses not zebras.)

I stayed in a Welsh cottage once which made me a little uneasy for no reason. One evening, I saw a shadow move across the hall through the gap under the door. It was probably a car outside but it looked like someone was walking through the hall and it spooked me!

I hope it wasn't mine!

I've slept there (alone) many times and never seen or heard anything but my cleaner hates being there at dusk due to strange noises and doors opening and closing themselves.

I asked the previous owner if he had ever experienced anything and he said that there had been some sightings of a figure in the doorway of the twin bedroom.

No guests have ever said anything....

I wonder whether it’s WW2 related? My Dm used to zoom at very short notice from her central London job to,Liverpool, as soon as she heard that DF’s Royal Navy ship would be in for 24 hours. They always stayed for that one night at the Adelphi.

Lovers who were fated never to meet again?
