Found a ‘thing’ nobody knows what it is…

So this little steel rod, about 3cm long and 3 mm Ø, perforated at one end and attached to a split ring and with a little machined solid ‘funnel’ pokey thingy at the end of it just appeared…and I can’t explain it! I found it attached to a bunch of keys (mine), and it was definitely not there before. In fact I don’t remember having ever seen it before nor do I know its use. The keys have always been either at home, or in my bag at work, and don’t really think anyone could have taken them, attached the split ring with this thing, and replaced them in my bag without me noticing. Also WHY? Colleagues are not pranksters types anyway, and don’t see what would be funny about this… my husband and grown up kids all deny having anything to do with this, and they too have no idea of what this thing could be. A google image search has found a similar object that however is way bigger and slightly different in design, and not something I would use or need/possess anyway. Anybody here who could shed some light as to WHAT this is? Once I find out that, I might have a clue as to what it’s doing with my keys (and find out if I am having some ‘episode’ or amnesia I need treatment for!! 🤣🤣 thanks in advance to those who mighy be able to help!

It's a barrel from a lock. We have one the same and I keep it with the key so I don't forget which key fits it!

MarthaJonesPhone · 14/07/2023 20:24

That looks like the thing that I take out of a hole on my exercise bike so I can fold it.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 14/07/2023 20:25

If it’s solid, could it be a release pin key? Maybe to release the radio in your car or something at work like a dispenser? If the end is shaped, it could be an Allen key used to release something or undo something. Or maybe to puncture something when paper straws just no longer do the trick - capri sun style?
if it’s hollow, a panic whistle? Dog whistle?

just some ideas which might jog a memory as I’ve no idea and am intrigued.

BunnyBettChetwynd · 14/07/2023 21:09

Have you taken your car to the garage recently and handed your keys over and they attached it?

Did you win it in a party cracker (after a few sherries) and think, oh that's a useful whistle/straw/pot dibber and attach it to your keys?

Was something that would identify it attached to the end once and now it's fallen off?

DH says it makes him think of something that might be used on boats? He's no idea what.

AdaColeman · 14/07/2023 21:32

It looks like some sort of security pin, could it be to open the door to your gas or electricity meter box?

NotReallyAllHere · 15/07/2023 00:12

It’s solid, the bit at the end is a strange shape but I think it could be use to unblock something… we fon’t have anything that needs unlocking with it really… if I’d doind it just loose in my bag I’d think someone might have dropped it in there by mistake but it was actually attached to the keyring where my home and car keys are… it’s really bothering now that I can’t figure it out or remember… 🤯

BunnyBettChetwynd, all good ideas but non that apply. Not taken the car to mechanic or wash, it’s a bunch only I use, i don’t think the piece is part of something broken, there are no glue residues or discolorations… 🤷🏻‍♀️

BigO247 · 15/07/2023 00:19

Do you have roof bars on your car?

Fizzadora · 15/07/2023 00:21

Alko hitch lock (caravan or trailer)?

Fizzadora · 15/07/2023 00:22

Or removable tow bar pin?

Don’t have either… gas is in a cupboard with a proper door, electricity panel is inside the house… no not that… lived in tjis house 30+ years… not part of anything in the house. We don’t have a boat, as suggested earlier, either.

Can you reverse image that picture - I don't know how to or I would give it a go😂

It’s only 3mm thick, there is no key hole in it! Its solid steel with the split ring going through a tiny hole on one end. Not a barrel, no.

I did. You just import the picture, much as you do to upload one here, on google images. What I hot is a load of quick release pins, that look very similar BUT the have a ball and spring mechanism at the opposite end from split ring (which mine doesn’t have), and also are much bigger/thicker… plus doesn’t explain the pokey bit …or why neither of us remembers ever seeing it before… 🥴🤯😢

Have you purchased a heavy duty padlock with a numerical code recently? Looks like a recoding tool to me.

Alko hitch lock (caravan or trailer)?

No caravan or trailer! I thought it might have something to do with DH’s bike but he’s never seen this thing before…😩

Does it actually matter?

AromanticSpices · 15/07/2023 00:36

It's a memory key. You tap the right spot on your forehead with it, and you instantly remember what it is... Grin
