Time for another spooky stories thread?

Hotpatootietimewarp · 26/09/2015 13:51

I know how much I enjoyed reading previous scary story threads so thought I'd start another and start with my own.

Now I always thought I had imagined this but after meeting up with my sister last week and getting on to this found out she remembers this too.

We both had a friend in the village who lived in a long house with an old barn out back, looked fairly normal had a ladder in the middle which took you up to the top level and the roof had a roof light window in it. Anyway this friend told us it was haunted and we thought she was having us on until she knocked on the door and an almighty bang answered, this kept happening. Then once it had stopped stuff started flying out of the roof window! Old sacks and old stove kettles etc! We were so scared but went in and no one was in there just totally empty. We then went in the house and said to friends mum and she said it must have been her dad but her dad was in the living room!

Needless to say I've never forgotten this and my sister obviously hasn't either.

So now I've started anyone else want to add any??

Hmm, I seem to have killed the thread...

Right now I've got a bit of time (I'm in the bath, so no baby) I will type a couple of my own experiences out.
They are very strange though...

OK, the house I grew up in was very haunted by ghosts. One of which was a German soldier from the first world war. How I knew this at 4 I don't know, but I did. He would appear in the corner of my bedroom, and when you looked down towards his boots he would begin to disappear, fog like.

Another was a pitch black figure of a man, which would ascend the stairs to the middle, then fly straight up and across the banister, blocking the way to the bathroom, he would the change shape, quite often into a giant spider. I know a lot of people would put this down to a childs over active imagination, but other family members witnessed this too, once my uncle saw it as I was leaving my bedroom to go to the toilet and my uncle was on his way upstairs. We both froze.

Another time I remember hearing the voice of my aunt, who had died that day. (Not known to me at this point) she told me I was her princess and not to forget that. I cried, then heard a woman telling me it would be alright. This woman knew my name. I looked up and sat at the end of my bed was a woman in a white dress, with brown curly hair and a light glowing around her. I didn't know this woman but I felt calm and safe and went to sleep. I told my mum about it the next day, and my uncle went to his house to fetch a photograph (he lived literally around the corner) the photograph was the woman who had visited me. It was my grandmother, who had died when my mum was 8!

She visited me again when I was 17. I had not long given birth to DS1 and he woke up. I've obviously heard him cry so woken up myself. My grandmother was stood over his cot. She smiled and put her finger to her lips then looked back at my baby, when I followed her gaze, I saw he was asleep, looked up again and she had gone.
Again I told my mum. Turns out my grandmother had also dealt with me as a baby! Another uncle had had an argument with my aunt and was sleeping in our sofa. He heard what he thought was my mum get up to shush me back to sleep. Said to my mum in the morning that she had got up fast to deal with me, my mum looked baffled and said I had slept through the night. They came to the conclusion it must have been my grandmother as my mum sounds like her.

I do have more but I'm turning wrinkly and need to get out of the bath!

Cersirys allegedly there is this thing that is known as RL that is apparently demanding at the weekend? Something to do with scary noisy little people and their more giant counterparts?

For years I have dreamt about things happening before they have happened, seen and felt things in houses and buildings that others don't. I am used to it but tend to trust my gut. Unfortunately ds seems to have acquired the skill and his dreams freak him out a little. I have been lucky and in all my time I have only ever been scared twice. Once was outside a property, it extruded a feeling of pure evil that was, and the only way I can think to describe it, what I would imagine to feel the attack of a dementor. The other was a face staring at me out of an alcove. There was a strong feeling of evil intent for that one too. More recently I had a visit from a spirit that seem to want to remind me that it was ok and to keep my spirits up. Ever had a huge from someone that was not there? Felt a hand stroke your hair as you were drifting off to sleep shhing you and telling you it will be ok? It's a weird feeling but yet also sooo reassuring that you just accept it without questioning.

I don't do woo. But, my DM passed in early 2003, and she was a smoker. There was a very unique scent of cigarettes and her perfume that I always remember when I think of her.

I have then only smelt it on two occasions since. The first time was just after DS was born when I ended up back in hospital with a suspected blood clot. I woke in the middle of the night sure that someone had woken me, and I could smell it. The second time was about a week ago when I was quite upset due to a quite big issue with the house and I was crying and worried that we'd made the wrong decision to move.

In neither case was there anyone or anything close to explain it, but when I did smell it, I immediately felt safe and comforted and that everything would be alright.

There may be a scientific reason, but part of me hopes it was my DM coming to let me know everything would be fine.

Dionysuss · 27/09/2015 20:06

After my Grandads funeral everyone in my mums house suddenly smelt his cigar smoke. He was a heavy smoker and the only smoker in the family, he wasn't allowed to smoke in my mums house, so would not have been lingering smells in fabric ect. My mum and nan think that was him saying goodbye. They haven't smelt it since.

Hotpatootietimewarp · 27/09/2015 20:07

So pleased more have been added!

Slightly freaked out at the big figure running after that boy after seeing the round light though!

Right now I'm back!
I have also seen balls in the sky! They have sped off though when I've looked. Amazingly fast. And definitely ball shaped, not your standard flying saucer from ufo movies! My DP and dad have both witnessed the same at some point in their lives. Weird..

I also dream stuff that comes true. Usually mundane crap, like going to the park (when I was a child) or bumping into someone I haven't seen for a while, I dream of the event and I know the day and time it will happen. Anyway, I remember this one vividly and it still freaks me now, I dream that me and my brother went to the chippy one Thursday. Which was a fairly normal thing for us to do when younger, but on the way back a man attacked us and my brother tried to fight this man off telling me to run, so I ran, I didn't know what else to do, and we didn't have a mobile with us (90s, we did have one each, but didn't take one as we didn't really use them) I had this sense of dread in the dream when I got home, then woke up. I refused to go to the chippy the next Thursday my mum asked, i was hysterical, so my brother said it was fine, he would go alone. He did and was attacked. He was able to break free and run. I honestly believe if I had been there things would have been different.

I sense things too, like odd houses and stuff. They seem to emit something that I feel if that makes sense?

Hotpatootietimewarp · 27/09/2015 20:25

I've just remembered a near miss

When I was younger I used to spend my weekends with my great granny and i spent a lot of time at the park across from her house.

Anyway this day I was there I'd be maybe 9 or 10 and I'd been with friends but they'd went in for tea so I stayed on. An older lad maybe 17 came not long after, I knew of him and knew he was trouble so I started to head back to my granny's and as I passed he stopped me and said 'show me your fanny' (sorry) well I ran away as fast as I could.

I never mentioned it to anyone as thought he was joking around but thinking about it now it could have been something so much worse

The light balls in the sky are lightening - look up ball lightening Smile

Another one here...Dsis was on her way to an interview at a racing yard early one morning. Stopped to let a man on horseback cross in front of her, didn't think anything of it as Newmarket has quite a few people on horses! Then it dawned on her - the horses hooves weren't making any noise, he was wearing a cape and big hat, there was no breath in the cold air, and both rider and horse disappeared in bushes to her side.

Best one is a friend of ours who was called to a house one night (he was a police officer) by a neighbour who was looking after it for the owner who was away. Lights were on in the house, so friend and his colleague plus neighbour used the key neighbour had to gain entry. Big house, they all heard a dog barking, so went to look for the source. Eventually found the dog in one of the upstairs bedrooms with the owner in bed looking very puzzled at being disturbed. They explained why they were there, apologised and left. Found out the next day that the neighbour had died the previous night in hospital some distance away.

SirChenjin · 27/09/2015 20:52

Oh, and YY to dreams and 'feelings'. I dreamt Princess Diana died a few weeks before she did, and get 'feelings' about things all the time. I've also gone to phone people, lifted up the received to dial and they've been on the other end about to dial me. Also have thoughts about people I haven't seen or thought of for years, and then meet or hear from them out of nowhere.

spanky2 · 27/09/2015 20:53

Marking place!

FattyNinjaOwl · 27/09/2015 20:56

sirchenjin definitely not ball lightening that I saw! It wasn't light, it was more a dull grey colour.

SirChenjin · 27/09/2015 21:02

They aren't always light - they vary in colour

Hotpatootietimewarp · 27/09/2015 21:03

Oh I've thought of another story/urban legend on another thread was the story about the abondoned house but there was lights on and when they looked in the window there was a man/goat type creature inside

Loving the scary stuff... More please!

Reallybadday · 27/09/2015 21:36

A few years ago we went on holiday in the UK. We were booked into a holiday lodge and when we got there, it was awful and I refused to stay.
We decided to find somewhere else and drove further on. At the next village there was a large abandoned hotel and, as we approached, I screamed at DH to stop the car. (I am usually very calm.) There was no way I wanted us to go anywhere near it. It felt evil and just wrong Hmm. We u-turned, left the area straight away and stayed somewhere 50 miles away.
After our holiday, I looked up the village and found reports of ghosts and other accounts of people feeling very uneasy about that building. It has been marked for demolition for nearly 10 years but afaik it's still there. I'll never go back to check though.

Hotpatootietimewarp · 27/09/2015 22:45

Reallybadday - probably a good job you had those feelings then!

Anyone got anymore to add?

My favourite MN woo stories include the following (abridged versions from my crap memory so excuse any inaccuracies):

  • The poster who was viewing a house as a child with her parents. The estate agent refused to accompany them inside, so her dad went in. A little while later he came steaming out of the house, white as a sheet, and said to the estate agent 'YOU KNEW, DIDN'T YOU?!?!' Apparently he'd walked upstairs to see the ghost / image of the previous occupant hanging from the bedroom door
  • The poster (she was a nanny IIRC) who was skiing, staying in a snow-surrounded chalet and woke up in the middle of the night and saw footprints all around the perimeter of the property leading up to the back door or window but no footprints leaving
  • The nurses in a hospital who took the lift to the basement vending machine for a chocolate fix during a nightshift. Lift doors opened, and they were faced not with their basement but with a scene from a WW2 burns unit. One of the nurses turned and stared at them, her eyes boring into them. They couldn't get the lift doors to shut.
  • The poster who saw the man staring at her in the bar. She worded her story SO well; incredibly chilling. She was in a normal wine bar or similar, and there was a man at the bar wearing clothing that appeared as though it was from the 70s. He was staring at her with the most intense hatred, as if he wanted to kill her. I don't remember any more details but it was fucking brilliant / spooky.

If any of the MNers who own those stories would like to come back and retell them better than I have, please do! Grin

Hairballs · 28/09/2015 08:48

Just flicked back through the thread properly and noticed the nightclub one has already been discussed. So glad it's not just me that remembers it!

Izzabellasasperella · 28/09/2015 08:57

I'd like to read the nightclub one again it really spooked me.

FruSirkaOla · 28/09/2015 09:15

I've just found the nightclub one on a thread in The Unexplained.

"In the late 1970s/early 1980's the place to go was TOTS (Talk of The south), which was a Disco in Southend on sea."

"We used to go every week."

"I started to notice a young man with blond hair. He was always alone and always stood not far from the bar. I would catch his eye and he would stare back but it felt very uncomfortable. He didn't smile back which was very odd as back then I was a gorgeous young thing! ;)"

"He was there every week and although I was having a riot of a time with my girl friends, I did start to look out for him. No one else appeared to notice him as we were all having such a great time."

"He was always dresses the same in shirt and trousers. He wasn't fashionable but he wasn't unfashionable. He was good looking and had a very clear complexion and wavy blond hair."

"I chat to anyone but I always had the feeling of being fearful of him and not to approach."

"I suppose I just got used to seeing him there."

"Fast forward nearly twenty years later and my disco days were long over and my then partner who was in the music business told me that he had to meet someone at the former TOTS. I think there was a name change and instead of a disco it was now a nightclub."

"I decided to go with him to see how much it had changed inside."

"We got there and off he went to meet this chap, it was only a quick chat."

"I strolled around, feeling rather out of place amongst the pretty young things and then wham! Straight in front of me about ten feet away was the boy/man I used to see all of those years ago!"

"Everything around me seemed to fade away and I could not tear my eyes away from him. He was angry, very angry I could feel his anger and I felt terrified. I was fixed to the spot and I cannot find the words to describe just how petrified I was."

"I felt as if I was in grave danger. This young man, perfectly ordinary looking was exactly the same as I'd seen him before. He hasn't aged and his hair and clothes were the same."

"All of a sudden, the world started rushing back into view and I could see and hear everything going on around me, I spun around and knew I had to get out of there as soon as I could. Thankfully my now ex had finished with the bloke he had to meet and I tugged on his arm to get us out of there."

"I have no idea what or why I saw this young man and why he should be so menacing."

"Another poster did suggest that a teenager had been run over and killed nearby but it doesn't explain why this presence would want to scare the crap out of me!"

"He was so scary because he was so normal looking and whatever it was about him had the power to give off the very strong vibe of anger and danger."

Izzabellasasperella · 28/09/2015 09:17

Yep still makes me shiver.

shutupanddance · 28/09/2015 09:27

Perhaps nightclub man was a vampireShock

Gatekeeper · 28/09/2015 09:32

I remember one story on here about some lads out camping and during the night/early hours of the morning they'd heard odd noises outside. One of them peeped out and saw a group of tiny people walking by
