My boy is 21 years old, 17 h ISH. I've had him 5 years but I've known him for 8. 2 years ago he damaged his DDFT. It has never really healed and this summer he has suffered with it because of the ground. I'd made the decision to let him have the summer on bute then put him down. 2 days ago he was kicked on the forearm of the same leg and it is deep and despite best efforts is infected, plus his tendon has blown. I'm having him put down at 7 am tomorrow I'm in bits. I'm a groom - have work with horses all my life and lost a few of my own but this is flooring me. He is so so gentle and lovely and I adore him but I don't want him in pain any more. He is on cloud nine tonight on painkillers.

I don't even know why I'm posting really. Just need to feel not so alone I guess.

Oh I’m so sorry. I don’t know anything abou horses but couldn’t not post. He sounds lovely, but it also sounds as if you’re doing him a kindness, he sounds as if he’s in a lot of pain.

WellThisIsShit · 15/07/2018 23:41

I am so sorry. It is the hardest decision to make and it never gets any easier. He is a lucky boy to be so loved Flowers

I'm so sorry op Thanks

Littlegreyauditor · 16/07/2018 00:10

Your decision comes from love. Not for convenience or because he isn’t “useful” or you can’t be bothered, but because you love him and you don’t want him to suffer. It’s the best thing you can do for him, to put his comfort before your own sadness.

Later, you will be glad that you were brave enough and loved him enough to take his pain away and the happy memories will still be with you.

I’m so sorry pet. Be strong. Flowers

DramaAlpaca · 16/07/2018 00:15

I'm so sorry. You are being very brave doing the right thing for him, it's the kindest thing you can do. Horses are such special creatures, they are amazing, and yours sounds lovely. Wishing you strength tomorrow Flowers

BillywigSting · 16/07/2018 00:16

Oh op Flowers

I remember the horse I learned to ride on being pts and he wasn't even mine but it's heartbreaking.

Be kind to yourself, and remember you're doing this from a place of love and mercy for not letting him suffer terrible pain, even though it causes you terrible pain. That is real love right there.

Time will help and eventually it won't be so raw, and thinking of him won't make you cry but smile.

Thinking if you. It's the hardest thing I ever did. I made the decision in the morning and insisted the vet came that day.

Oh my poor poor girl.
I am so so so sorry.
Loosing an animal who you love is heartbreaking.
We all send you hugs and an extra big hug for your boy who is hopefully now pain free and playing with his lost friends at the rainbow bridge. ❤️😞

SeventeenTwoChestnutMare · 16/07/2018 16:55

I’m sorry, OP. I hope it was as peaceful as could be hoped Flowers

Flowers We've had to PTS two much loved horses, it's never easy as they are part of the family (though thank goodness they didn't live in the house!)
OldSpeclkledHen · 16/07/2018 17:54

I hope it was peaceful for him.

It's shit having animals sometimes, but we can only do the very best we can for them, no matter how hard it is for us xxx

Orlandointhewilderness · 16/07/2018 21:59

Thank you everyone for your kind words. It was a beautiful morning and he was calm, relaxed and happy. it was a good an end as possible. I've just been up to check the other 2 and they seem fine. I'm sore though, I have a permanent lump in my throat and I miss him.

His name was Max. He was the loveliest, kindest and most gentlemanly boy.

I'm losing my horse tomorrow. I'm breaking.
