My boy is 21 years old, 17 h ISH. I've had him 5 years but I've known him for 8. 2 years ago he damaged his DDFT. It has never really healed and this summer he has suffered with it because of the ground. I'd made the decision to let him have the summer on bute then put him down. 2 days ago he was kicked on the forearm of the same leg and it is deep and despite best efforts is infected, plus his tendon has blown. I'm having him put down at 7 am tomorrow I'm in bits. I'm a groom - have work with horses all my life and lost a few of my own but this is flooring me. He is so so gentle and lovely and I adore him but I don't want him in pain any more. He is on cloud nine tonight on painkillers.

I don't even know why I'm posting really. Just need to feel not so alone I guess.

Oh my word I can't imagine how sad to just feel. Big Thanks for you. I would like to hope I can give my boy a "best as it could be" send off like this when his time comes. Heartbreaking.

Thanks everyone. I have lots of wine and a night to feel his loss so keenly. He was so so lovely. MY 6 year old could ride him and handle him and he would never dream of being anything other than a complete gentleman. I just can't believe he has gone.

I’m so sorry . I lost my lovely boy to colic last Sunday - totally out of the blue , and we still feel very flat here . The worst part is looking out of the kitchen window not to see him looking back . You did the only thing you could do , as I did . But that doesn’t mean you have to like it xx

Orlandointhewilderness · 17/07/2018 21:56

hugs to you as well plomino. colic is a bugger isn't it. xxx

Thinking of you, Orlando, and your DC too.

And Flowers, plomino.

Plomimo - so very sorry to hear. colic is a beast - so sudden and often fatal. My thoughts are with you.
