Teachers- what time do you get to school and leave?

I am two weeks away from finishing my PGCE and I have a job lined up for September.

I have been told the school are very happy with any times as long as planning is sorted and you are there before children arrive etc.

Currently I arrive between 7-7:20am and leave 4-4:30pm latest unless there is a meeting. This is on placement.

I am curious what other teachers do!

I arrive between 7.45am and 8am and leave between 4.45pm and 5pm. This has always been my pattern since having children. I worked longer days at school in the days before kids.

Thank you!

I normally arrive around 8 and leave between 5:30 and 6. Trying to leave a bit earlier one day a week.

wonderouswelly · 16/06/2026 21:13

Thank you. That’s quite late compared to the teachers I am currently working with!

I arrive at about 8am and stay until about 4.30 then need to leave to pick child up. It depends on your personal situation/how you like to work though! One of my colleagues leaves at 3 every day but works at home, I prefer to get as much as possible done at school.

Directed time is 8.40-3.40
I arrive between 7.15 and 7.45 and leave between 4 and 7.

I’m in at 7.30 and leave around 4.30/5. Sometimes later. Sometimes I work at home, sometimes not. I haven’t tonight, for example.

On my PGCE I was told by my training provider to be “the first one in and the last one out” which is nuts. One of the deputy heads is in by 6.30 (I work where I trained). No thanks!

So long as you are in on time for your directed time and don’t leave before the end of it and get your work done it’s all good.

Thank you! This is great. I have a child who is at the school too. So working out logistics etc and if she’ll have a long day in clubs etc!

Technically, I'm only required to be in school from 8.30 - 3.15. Usually I arrive around 7.30 and leave at 4.30.

When I was on the SLT, 0730-1800 (at the earliest), with a very quick lunch and often stuff to continue with at home.
Now, 0730-1700 (at the latest) and I take at least 30 mins for lunch. I rarely do more at home, other than when my classes have had exams/tests.

Since stepping down from SLT I get home and watch Countdown most evenings before making dinner. Life is soooo much better!

makemineadecaf · 17/06/2026 16:06

I arrive at 7.50 and leave at 4 apart from meeting day.

PumpkinPie2016 · 17/06/2026 16:08

Our school day starts at 8.10am and I am head of a core subject so I get in around 7am to set my day up and deal with any cover etc.

I leave around 4.30pm most days.

avocadotofu · 20/06/2026 13:34

That would be a dream. Do you do a lot of stuff from home in evenings etc?

No, I rarely do any work in the evening or weekends. I have children to pay attention to. I have been teaching for nearly 20 years and have always been strict with my time. Some things which help with time management seem to be - medium term planning, not procrastinating, and learning how to prioritise.

Fuzzypinetree · 21/06/2026 14:00

I arrive at about 8.30am and usually leave at about 2.30pm-3pm. I'm part time, though.
Next year, I'm going back full time and will mostly do 8.30am-4pm. Can't stay any longer, due to my own kids having to be picked up.

Whatalunatic · 21/06/2026 18:43

By 7:45am and then anywhere between 4:15 and 5:30

BlackCat14 · 21/06/2026 19:37

Arrive at 8.15 but leave at different times every day depending what I need to do. Sometimes I’m out the door by 3.30, the latest I’d leave is around 5pm.

angelcake20 · 22/06/2026 18:20

I arrive at 8.00ish and stay until we are kicked out at 5. I’d prefer to stay longer as I always have to do more work at home. Most of my colleagues arrive earlier and leave earlier but have younger children than me.

WonderingWanda · 22/06/2026 21:38

The times you are in the building don't necessarily reflect worked hours op. Pre kids I was there 7 till 6. When the kids were at nursery it was 8.30 till 5 but worked late at night to keep on top of things. Now ai generally work 8 till 5 and in the evenings often but not as much as I used to.
