The Fifty-Eight Republic - Do no masks mean that Sports Day will take place?

You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

We are just doing sports day in our bubbles. But our bubbles are doubling in size (only to 45), so more competition. I hate it and will aim to find something else to do. Same as I do on the afternoon of the Christmas fairs.

eitak22 · 12/05/2021 19:37

Sports day happening here in bubbles but still going to the local secondary. Not sure how I feel about it but we do a lot of unconventional sports so even those who aren't sporty have fun.

Today has felt like the longest day... currently stress eating haribo.

namechangedyetagain · 12/05/2021 19:46

Checking in as need a virtual talking to.

So pleased that most of you are finally vaccinated. And heart goes out to secondary and all of the shit that is involving with the assessments.

Outing but I've hit a wall. Have slept most of day, voice is going and I'm seriously doubting if I'm going to make it to the end of the course. So much to do. So little time. And ive lost a day today by being ill, so feeling really annoyed with myself.

Managed a secure pass on the BIG essay but stressing about getting the last one done in a few weeks.

Anyway any top tips on teaching a lively class with hardly any voice? I only have a TA in the morning. I don't know how you all do it. I really don't.

WhenSheWasBad · 12/05/2021 19:51

name you’ve not hit a wall you are ill.

I’ve no advice, if you are sick you shouldn’t go in. But I totally get feeling the need to go in even when well.

Maybe a whistle or something?

JanFebAnyMonth · 12/05/2021 19:55

Am not sure anyone would wish for Bob as an uncle .... @MrsHamlet, what do you think?

(Not really a teacher, but here goes:) use yr shred of voice to make it clear you are going to have a lovely day / afternoon of seeing how well they respond to sign language. Teach them three they need to watch for. Make it clear however, that if they fail there will be some kind of dire consequence.

LolaSmiles · 12/05/2021 19:55

name
If you're not well then you're not hitting a wall. Your body is sending you a message that it needs to stop and can't sustain what it's doing. My mentor gave me great advice about looking after myself and it's something I tell others.

Great news on the essay mark though.

RigaBalsam · 12/05/2021 20:01

Thanks staff

TheHoneyBadger · 12/05/2021 20:12

Have a couple of days off Name - it is allowed to be ill. No good running yourself into the ground. I had to be signed off for a fortnight during my pgce with the lame sounding but real phenomena of 'recurrent viral syndrome'. My immune system was flawed from being exposed to so many bugs in such a short time and was never getting time to recover before getting hit again.

Your classes still have their teacher who can take over whilst you're poorly.

TheHoneyBadger · 12/05/2021 20:12

floored not flawed!

CarrieBlue · 12/05/2021 20:21

We definitely have way more then one staff member unvaccinated

Across the school we have many unvaccinated but working in the same room just one. And the kids of course (though one of them is vaxed as ECV).

namechangedyetagain · 12/05/2021 20:38

They do but they're not in school tomorrow so I said I'd struggle in. I'll just have to see how it goes. I'm mindful of hitting my hours (though I think I've done way over compared to others).

Have been taking drugs and sleeping all day. Im loaded up with strepsils, a litre of water and lots of blind hope!

JanFebAnyMonth · 12/05/2021 20:39

Emergency meeting of SAGE tomorrow re Indian variant. This inews article has bits about possible continuation of school mask wearing in Bolton or even Greater Manchester after the weekend because of it:

inews.co.uk/news/scientists-fear-possible-delay-end-lockdown-uk-cases-india-variant-triple-one-week-998811

Also that June 21st step four could be delayed - don’t know how likely Boris would be to do that though?

ChloeDecker · 12/05/2021 20:48

That makes sense! Yes, in the same room that’s so sensible.
HarrietDVane · 12/05/2021 20:51

Hello everyone and thanks for the good wishes. It's been a calmer day today with no fresh safeguarding shenanigans so I've had time to breathe at least! I'm SO behind with marking though! BlushSad I'm hoping to get in early tomorrow and tackle some of the backlog before school.

Well done on passing your essay, Name - don't struggle in when you're still too ill! I have taught with no voice but it was horrendous - and only possible because my class at the time were an absolute dream. You could try some Vocalzone lozenges; they helped me!

On the vaccine front, I've got #1 booked for the weekend.

Appuskidu · 12/05/2021 20:53

Sports Day cancelled here which is superb. Lesson observations and book scrutinies have not been cancelled though which is less superb Angry.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 12/05/2021 21:01

Sports day is OK for a couple of hours. No word on ours yet, I hope it's cancelled.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 12/05/2021 21:05

Lesson observations and book scrutinies have not been cancelled though

I started again this week. Thank goodness. Behaviour for learning is dreadful, I was genuinely shocked what they were getting away with. Also, the whole thing about 'slow things down' has been taken so literally by one teacher than he is playing Oak videos straight through while he marks other work, half the children not engaging at all. There was a minor bollocking yesterday, then today defensive conversations and tears. I mean, I can't let that shit slide.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 12/05/2021 21:06

For primary by the way - he's something on 'lost learning':

MrsHamlet · 12/05/2021 21:09

God no.... I love my Bobs but I don't want to be related to them!
In other news, I'm in trouble with my godchildren because, and I quote, "we can't sleep because we haven't had tiramisu"

CallmeHendricks · 12/05/2021 21:09

Blimey, Rule. Was that whilst you were observing? An Oak video?

HarrietDVane · 12/05/2021 21:17

Shock to the Oak video!

Robert Peston on Twitter is giving me the absolute rage.

StaffRepFeistyClub · 12/05/2021 21:19

Oak video in an observation Shock

Preston is getting a pasting. I'm team Rosen this time.

MrsHamlet · 12/05/2021 21:33

Note to self: no oak videos in lesson obs

Piggywaspushed · 12/05/2021 21:36

Oh, I saw the beginning of that Peston thread and saw that people had reacted and wondered why. Didn't read far enough. Shit for brains.

I once witnessed him conducting his affair in the British Library.
