You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

@Piggywaspushed - our technician ripped a film from DVD and put it on Sharepoint - he’s very hot on copyright as he started as music tech but as we own the DVD and the folder is only accessible by those students he thought it was OK. Is that an option?

GravityFalls · 07/01/2021 07:48

Apparently college had two students in yesterday- I imagine this is mostly for tech but might also be for a safe haven as we do have some quite vulnerable students. But they’re not expecting many more as not many students live all that close.

Our testing is also set up and they’ve encouraged anyone who is in the building to get tested any time they want.

GravityFalls · 07/01/2021 07:51

The other option is something I did with a short film where I played it and recorded my screen, which let me pause it and talk over it. I can’t remember exactly how I did it but it was something in Windows that let me - it’s how people stream themselves playing games.

Piggywaspushed · 07/01/2021 07:55

Hi gravity what is sharepoint? I am so jealous of the IT support other schools get. Our IT guy knows his stuff but does not support teaching and learning at all and takes months to reply to email.

I also don't know how t record a screen : that's been suggested but I bet Amazon would block it and/or my laptop wouldn't allow the software.

phlebasconsidered · 07/01/2021 07:59

@NeurotreeWenceslas that's me too! Our English lead is the deputies bestie and about 12 years old. Literally everything she explains in a patronising manner to us is something i've already done and seen cycle back and forth over the decades. I just smile and nod at her.

SquashedFlyBiscuits · 07/01/2021 07:59

Have had an allergic reaction to a new soap that I got for Christmas. My face is bright red. Today's zoom call and tomorrow's learning videos will be presented in the style of a lobster!

JanuaryChill · 07/01/2021 08:00

Can you ring the exam board for advice Piggy??

flumposie · 07/01/2021 08:03

@Piggywaspushed I'm in a similar situation. My 3 media classes are all in the middle of moving image texts. Having to abandon lessons and revisit whenever we return to school.

Ha! So like the health visitor.

I'm fine now, I'm going to spend time on a v clear email pointing out the folly of the idea as well as what I will and won't be doing when I'm more chilled.

Far more important bleeding things to do ffs!

Cracklefraggle · 07/01/2021 08:15

Piggy have PM'd you.

Piggywaspushed · 07/01/2021 08:16

The exam board are not helpful on this aspect january. They just signpost the free films on Netflix (vanishingly few of them)and tell us other ones are on Prime. That is the entire sum of their helpfulness!

Piggywaspushed · 07/01/2021 08:18

Thanks crackle!

Yeah my worry flump is we won't return and then we are scuppered, and also what to do in the meantime!!

These aren't kids who can't afford a subscription to Prime or don't ahve tech. They just want it all handed to them on a plate.

QuickTime does screen recordings but not with audio. You'd have to do that separately and then put the two together in editing software. Nightmare.

Sorry to hear it's so stressful, @Piggywaspushed Flowers

@NeurotreeWenceslas - can't believe any school is thinking about scrutiny at a time like this. If SLT really need something to do there may be better things?! Sorry they're arses. Angry

MrsHerculePoirot · 07/01/2021 08:27

@RuleWithAWoodenFoot today is a non teaching day but other that GP appt I’m on the laptop supporting our staff teaching on teams so if you need help pm me and I could ring you if that helps!

MrsHerculePoirot · 07/01/2021 08:30

@Piggywaspushed do you have an iPhone or iPad you can watch film on yourself? If so I think you could screen record the film in bits on that device. Then transfer to your laptop and then use loom play it and then talk when you need to in smaller chunks maybe?

Piggywaspushed · 07/01/2021 08:39

I don't , no.

I also have never used Loom (and don't think I can with school device)

We have a FB page for film and literally people are spending about 30 - 50 extra hours a week setting up lessons. I don't have the time, equipment , skill or motivation!

I own : a school Dell laptop (I know people think we are lucky but this means massive admin control of everything), a useless six year old Samsung with no remaining storage on it and that's it!

It is literally so ridiculous, too. If the kids had got their own copy six months ago when I told them to , I could half solve the issue!

MrsHamlet · 07/01/2021 08:41

@Piggywaspushed do you have a link governor for your subject? I'd be tempted to email SLT AGAIN and copy them in explained in gory detail what the impact will be and how it can be saved.

SansaSnark · 07/01/2021 08:43

@noblegiraffe

Question for secondaries: is your school still setting up a mass covid testing centre?

My school has said literally nothing about this so I assumed it was in the bin but on the handing in section 44 thread there are still schools going full steam ahead?

We are testing all staff every time they come onto site, and all key worker students will be screened this week.

Some teaching staff have volunteered to supervise.

We didn't have enough tests arrive to offer testing more widely.

In some ways, screening staff, even with an inaccurate test, is probably better than nothing BUT it means more staff are required on site each day, as we need people available to cover if someone tests positive and has to go home.

noblegiraffe · 07/01/2021 08:44

You told the kids to buy it and they didn’t? Why can’t you insist now? Surely vital equipment like a calculator.

MrsHerculePoirot · 07/01/2021 08:44

In the meantime can you find a teacher at another school who will share their lessons? On YouTube or something?!? Might be less work....

eitak22 · 07/01/2021 08:54

I stupidly bit on a thread and now regret it. Expectations from parents for homeschooling are crazy and of course it's not fair KW are getting taught. Screw Gav and his idiocy.

Piggy that's really frustrating, most film share websites dont work on prime and netflix (we tried over Christmas). Could you insist children need to buy the film? Would SLT support that?

echt · 07/01/2021 09:27

Piggy, what platform are you using? Teams?.

Does your school have Clickview?

GravityFalls · 07/01/2021 09:28

This is how I recorded my screen on my (bog standard) Windows laptop - I didn't need to download anything: www.laptopmag.com/uk/articles/how-to-video-screen-capture-windows-10

GravityFalls · 07/01/2021 09:29

Sharepoint is what Teams is - Teams is a skin for Sharepoint. It's basically just a shared folder with restricted access.

hedgehogger1 · 07/01/2021 09:40

@Piggywaspushed Dear SLT. I am ready to purchase DVDs for my class of our film. I am unable to teach until this has been done. Can you please confirm the best method for me to claim these expenses back in the shortest possible time as I'm sure you are aware I wish to return to teaching as soon as possible.

Or something like that
