You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give ‘The Every twat for Themselves mob’ the staffroom password as a number of them are operating in an alternative reality.

No DfE muppets allowed

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom, especially if you have not used the hand gel. Close the door quietly on your way out and put your mask on.

Colleague's just informed me of her primary daughter's bubble sent home, due to positive child's case; not hit the news yet. And that's a relatively low case area.

ohthegoats · 10/09/2020 08:17

I'm getting to the 'laughing everytime it's bad news' stage of slight nutso. Class sign of stress for me. I hope that when we get it in my family it's quite chilled.

Spent last night mostly having the giggles about 'covid marshals', which probably isn't the right response to BNP types applying for jobs where they get to tell me off.

motherrunner · 10/09/2020 08:44

I’m the same @ohthegoats. I have resigned myself to catching it so I’m just like ‘bring it on’ which DH tells me is a dangerous attitude to have.

So everyday this week a school has closed a bubble in my area - wonder what today will bring?!

flumposie · 10/09/2020 09:08

Thinking of you @Fossie. Sick already of parents moaning that sending bubbles home is not sustainable and that isolating shouldn't have to take place if you'd have contact with a positive case. I'm easily replaced as a (older) teacher but not as a parent.

WhyNotMe40 · 10/09/2020 09:16

I'm "bring it on" as well. I cannot think of any other way to cope with this.

RobertsUncle · 10/09/2020 09:18

Me too Mother, and my husband's the same!
Although I'm hoping I've already had it. There was something going round in the 2 weeks before lockdown. I had a horrid cold but of course worked through it. No testing available obvs. Another member of staff took 1 day off during that time for her cold
and she's had the antibody test - positive.

echt · 10/09/2020 09:25

Thinking of you from Melbourne.

We go back in some fashion next term, but all dependent on falling infection rates so could change.

Fossie · 10/09/2020 10:00

Thanks for your concern. I’m feeling fine today, maybe a little in shock. I’ve been in denial for a week shrugging off a headache, sore throat, glands up, general aches, mental fog etc as just stress. In some ways it’s easier now to stop trying so hard. School are being very good. I guess the rest of the staff find out today. I hope they are ok with me and none get sick. I was only in school for Inset days so staff were there just not students.

DD1 who also has it in 19 so not young. I’m trying to isolate at home so goodness knows if anyone will eat today. I’m slightly worried about DD2 (18 year old) who should be sitting an A level next month. She really can’t get this. I’ve maybe outed myself with this month info!

Fossie · 10/09/2020 10:01

*much not month

echt · 10/09/2020 10:02

All the best, Fossie.

Augustbreeze · 10/09/2020 10:59

Any other secondaries had staff or students slipping in hand sanitiser on the floor?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 10/09/2020 12:32

You’re not alone with the bring it on, attitude. There were definitely a few of us in work in March with that attitude when there was a shortage of PPE.

Our thinking was if you are going to get it, you might as well get it when there are plenty of free ICU or ECMO beds if you need one.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 10/09/2020 12:37

No, August.

But now I think of it, for any science teachers around, the sanitiser is extremely flammable. Do not use it just before using a Bunsen burner or doing anything involving static electricity.

SaltyAndFresh · 10/09/2020 12:43

Oh shit, that's a thought. Science block and fire exit is right underneath use.

SaltyAndFresh · 10/09/2020 12:53

Hope you get thorough it ok @Fossie. Make sure you keep us updated so we know what to expect!

I'm very much of a 'bring it on' attitude too. If it transpires that this will all be fine I'd be able to settle and get on with it. If not, we need an alternative and quickly.

My DC's school won't provide any work while we're waiting for test results because they're teaching. I'd appreciate at least an overview so I can sort something myself. Two days and counting ...

DreamingofBrie · 10/09/2020 13:25

Sorry to hear you're unwell @Fossie, and to all of those who have had difficult starts or are isolating.

A secondary close to me has sent a yeargroup home, and a colleague has had their dc sent home too. I had my first day of teaching yesterday and although I'm happy to see the pupils again, my head was mashed by the end of the day. I also seem to have come down with a UTI since school started on Monday (possibly a stress reaction and not enough liquids), so have been in real pain, but lovely dh went and bought two litres of cranberry juice and I have been necking water on my day off today, so things seem to have calmed down.

Working like mad today to prep for a 5 lesson day tomorrow. I'd forgotten how hard it is to teach after a holiday! My timings were all off yesterday Sad, so I did no Maths with one group and set too much for another....

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 10/09/2020 13:30

@SaltyAndFresh

Oh shit, that's a thought. Science block and fire exit is right underneath use.
Large fire might be less of an issue I assume most RAs might include not storing the saniyy to user near flames.

Our fire officer is a big fan of an annual update on how not to set your hands alight when using alcohol gel as part of our training. Just occurred it might be useful advice here in case it hadn’t been thought of.

Keepdistance · 10/09/2020 13:59

It's like chicken pox parties but they are limiting the invites.
To teachers children and parents. (Unlimited invites).
20s now can only have small parties.
The workplace ones were too small and have to get bigger!
Surely other workplaces dont have 2% infected? 500/24000 school.

Piggywaspushed · 10/09/2020 14:01

These things are sent to try us : unconscious student in my room for an hour earlier...

motherrunner · 10/09/2020 14:36

Another day, another school closure. This time a primary school. Makes a total of 6 school closures this week.

Danglingmod · 10/09/2020 14:55

We have 7 schools down (year groups at least) in a "low cases" area Hmm

Danglingmod · 10/09/2020 14:55

Oh, no, Piggy! Hopefully didn't slip on sanitiser (yes, it is happening...)

WhenSheWasBad · 10/09/2020 15:19

Oh god. The worse I’ve had to deal with was a very green looking pupil, sent to loos then home. Piggy your school sounds tough.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 10/09/2020 15:27

Oh god. Hope they (and you) are ok piggy

WhyNotMe40 · 10/09/2020 16:05
