Schools open until 6pm, 45 weeks a year

Got too angry when viewing this on the breakfast "news" last week (OK, so it was Daybreak, but even so) to find out whether this is seriously likely to happen, or just another sound-bite from the wanker Gove.

Have I misunderstood? Is it that there will be "childcare provision" or are they seriously expecting us to teach until 6? In which case, when are we meant to do all our other work? And will they pay us for working in what are currently unpaid holidays?

There are other threads about this, not sure if you have seen them.

I can't say for sure, but think it unlikely. Even if it is available to parents to opt into, it certainly won't be compulsory.

If it does happen it will be interesting to see how many of those threatening to H.ed will actually deregister.

Personally, I think he's rattling our cage precisely so that we all squawk about it & give him an excuse to slag us off for being bolshy workshy types who need a good hating in the Daily Heil regularly to keep us on our toes.

Probably this is because it hasn't snowed so he can't sneer at us for gleefully & intentionally causing childcare chaos when it does...

It didn't take off then, I see no reason why it will, now, despite a perceived need.

It's not a Goveism - he repudiated it entirely on the day it appeared on the blog of some think-tank person.

Its in "news" a bit of a bun fight in places but the article was linked to.

I don't think it should fall onto teachers to provide what is essentially childcare after 3pm, besides you have enough to do already and have families you need to see {grin]
I don't think there is anything wrong with childcare on school premises for those who require it, apart from the tidying up issues, of course.

I H.ed but always interested in what's going on as I don't know if dd may go back some time.

FWIW, most parents even those who are working seem against the idea especially if compulsory

I know this has been threatened a lot over the last few years-usually at the beginning of a school holiday when Gove et al try to appeal to harrassed parents with childcare issues, but could terms and conditions actually be changed to that extent? Could lessons be extended to 6pm and terms extended by 6 weeks with no extra pay? He'd have to dismantle the 1265 rule-but could he actually do it?
