Thoughts on the King and Prince of Wales tax disclosures

According to the BBC KC and PW have released details of the tax they paid in the 2024-2025 Tax Year.

Apparently KC is in the Top 100 tax payers - The Sunday Times Rich List for 2025 placed him at 238.

I think it’s good they have done this and believe they are entitled to use the same legal tax avoidance measures everyone else can use. I don’t think we have a right to know every detail of their personal wealth but this is balanced against transparency regarding the Sovereign Grant and Duchies.

King Charles reveals he paid £12.9m in tax for 2024-25

The King becomes first monarch to publish their tax payments - with the figures putting him among the UK's top 100 taxpayers.

They're Duchy assets and the Duchy doesn't pay CGT so nothing at all will happen I suspect.

It's an interesting move though which also raises some intriguing questions not least why he's making a move that on the face of it will deprive both W and eventually George of a lot of lovely loot.

I shall be quite interested to see where any fees, licences and proposed rental income end up.

Maybe he is making that move because it is for the good of others, and he is a genuine person who is not totally selfishly centred around himself and his family. He is doing a good thing, because he cares about other people, and the difference he can make.

I don't see how you can read this any other way. Maybe, just maybe, he should be given credit for this step from us all - cynics included!

If you give a moose a muffin…

Well now the cockroach goading made some sort of sense however limited but I'm utterly intrigued by this latest insult.

Explain?

It’s a children’s book. If you give a moose a muffin; he will want jam on it.

It’s a commentary on how some people are never happy.

There also make helpful books about insects and how to tell a cricket from a cockroach.

NotTalkinBoutTheLinen · 06/07/2026 20:34

As for goading…

simpsonthecat · 06/07/2026 20:37

Of course they have scrutiny. They are paid handsomely for their huge privilege

And as for paying tax, so they effing should! King and heir are beyond wealthy. Taxes aren't just for the little people.

CathyorClaire · 06/07/2026 20:38

Do they explain how to copy and paste either or both from external sources and why anyone might though?

I hope for once you're right.

We'll see 🙂

That’s a leap and an incorrect one. You did see that someone else was able to post the same crickets?

It’s a function on the keypad of all the smartphones I’ve had in the last decade or more. There is a small button that looks like a smiley face with which one can access all manner of emoticons. The cricket is one of them. It’s fun!

🤩

@CathyorClaire I’m using an iPhone but assume they all have this option

Am I right that you only pay when you dispose of assets, at which point CGT is calculated? I wonder what will happen when William disposes of millions of pounds worth of assets to invest in housing - which is a 'good thing' for people needing accommodation. Seems unfair that he would have to pay when he is purely selling assets to benefit others.

Under the Duchy of Cornwall Management Act, any sale of property worth >£500k must be approved by the Treasury.

Willian does not pay capital gains tax because the profits from all capital sales are invested back into the Duchy, so he does not benefit from them directly. He receives the net annual income from the Duchy.
He is not eligible to pay income tax on the income from the Duchy, but does pay it voluntarily.

He does pay income tax and capital gains tax as required on other personal assets.

Super stuff.

But I wasn't the only one to see cockroaches...

ETA and it's still external to the MN offerings.

Edited

🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
Letters are also external to MN and there were no cockroaches from me.

CathyorClaire · 06/07/2026 21:14

Emoji offerings as you know 🙄

You say crickets tomato I say cockroaches tomato.

NotTalkinBoutTheLinen · 06/07/2026 21:15

No, I don’t know because I use my own device keyboard. What even is your point?

NotTalkinBoutTheLinen · 06/07/2026 21:18

I can tell the difference. If you really can’t, may I kindly suggest increasing your font size?

You used emojis outwith MN parameters to goad on MN.

Maybe just own it?!

I’m not goading anyone, anymore than whomever upthread was goading me when I didn’t answer them and they commented on it.

I am truly sorry I’ve upset you.

simpsonthecat · 05/07/2026 21:53

Now this is weird. On my mobile they are deffo cockroaches, on my laptop they are grasshoppers!

Don't get the relevance of either!

@CathyorClaire This post indicates they showed up two different ways on different devices.

I posted crickets. Meaning I got no reply to the net worth vs net wealth question.

ewww! Not cute like mine! , I can see the confusion, they really should standardise these things.

NotTalkinBoutTheLinen · 07/07/2026 12:22

It’s nothing to do with MN. Emojis are Unicode characters. When using one, it’s a code that is sent, not an image.
Devices use different emoji fonts to draw them:

• Apple uses Apple Color Emoji
• Google uses Noto Color Emoji
• Samsung uses its own Samsung emoji set
• Windows uses Segoe UI Emoji

Thank you @jeffgoldblum for stepping in here.
