Thoughts on the King and Prince of Wales tax disclosures

According to the BBC KC and PW have released details of the tax they paid in the 2024-2025 Tax Year.

Apparently KC is in the Top 100 tax payers - The Sunday Times Rich List for 2025 placed him at 238.

I think it’s good they have done this and believe they are entitled to use the same legal tax avoidance measures everyone else can use. I don’t think we have a right to know every detail of their personal wealth but this is balanced against transparency regarding the Sovereign Grant and Duchies.

King Charles reveals he paid £12.9m in tax for 2024-25

The King becomes first monarch to publish their tax payments - with the figures putting him among the UK's top 100 taxpayers.

Yes, I think we will be hard pressed to find anyone willing to pay tax repeatedly on the same money.

Honestly most people if they were excempt from paying tax , certainly wouldn’t then pay voluntarily!

Of course they wouldn’t.

I am going to link the article that was hidden yesterday. It expresses what I and others wonder about
And NotTalkin, I think you said you wanted to read it ?
If mnhq hides it again. I'll contact them and ask why

I give up!

I tried to link that article again and it won't let me. No idea why, it comes from a reliable source. I am going to contact MN hq

@jeffgoldblum Do you believe people should be taxed annually on all accumulated wealth?

Andy Burnham, is that you?

simpsonthecat · 06/07/2026 09:48

OK... MN have uncovered it, I had no idea all links had to be approved? I've often linked stuff and it is there instantly.

Interesting piece from the normally lap-it-all-up Amanda Platell here:

https://archive.ph/YpHlJ

A pop star with a net worth less than half C3's is paying twice as much in tax. (W of course pays even less - around a third of Harry Style's bill).

Half measures like this release of broad figures while omitting the detail are starting to look like an own-goal.

Edited

WRT this article it’s comparing apples with pears. Income and net worth are two different things.

I agree we need transparency but we also need to apply the same rules consistently e.g. if you own a property you can rent it out, you can set up companies and trusts to use legal tax avoidance measures.

Not sure who is behind this YouTube channel. The illustrations seem to be using AI so I don't know if it's psy ops.

But this claims King Charles was trying to take ownership of Bagshot Park the home of Prince Edward but he fought a legal battle against his own elder brother using evidence from the Queen on bequests

Someone asked on site stuff! Mn replied and are aware and working on it! , no mention of a breach luckily.

CathyorClaire · 06/07/2026 16:41

Income and net worth are two different things.

Well yes but given net worth includes assets like investments, stocks and shares and cash savings which can generate taxable income it seems a reasonable assumption to make that someone with a lower net worth is in turn generating less in the way of taxable returns on their assets leaving this mysterious discrepancy.

I don't doubt both chaps have the help of red-hot accountants to legally reduce their tax bills but as we don't have the crucial details of the royal income and claimed expenses we're still left with more questions than answers.

ajandjjmum · 06/07/2026 17:41

The point is that everyone pays tax on their income - whether income tax or capital gains. They do not pay on their net worth. Some people don't seem to understand the difference. The red-hotted accountants have nothing to do with this - assuming that they can add up correctly, and abide by the law. What mysterious discrepancy are you referring to?

simpsonthecat · 06/07/2026 17:51

Except the Duchies do not pay Capital Gains. Unlike the rest of the british population. Apparently the Duchies don't pay CGT because C&W don't benefit from increases in their assets.... rightio!

ajandjjmum · 06/07/2026 17:55

Am I right that you only pay when you dispose of assets, at which point CGT is calculated? I wonder what will happen when William disposes of millions of pounds worth of assets to invest in housing - which is a 'good thing' for people needing accommodation. Seems unfair that he would have to pay when he is purely selling assets to benefit others.

CathyorClaire · 06/07/2026 19:35

As I said net worth can incorporate assets that generate income.

Unless the total of all C3's income streams is disclosed along with the details of the expenses he's off-setting we can't possibly know if the blanket tax paid figure
is accurate.

The net worth thing seems to have become a bit of a red herring when the main point of the article is C3's lack of transparency.

They're Duchy assets and the Duchy doesn't pay CGT so nothing at all will happen I suspect.

It's an interesting move though which also raises some intriguing questions not least why he's making a move that on the face of it will deprive both W and eventually George of a lot of lovely loot.

I shall be quite interested to see where any fees, licences and proposed rental income end up.

Its only unfair because its designed that way and the Royals can have laws that don't apply to them 🙄 again by design. Time to change the system wouldn't you agree...why should millionaires/billionaires not abide by the same laws.

CathyorClaire · 06/07/2026 20:04

It was your red herring!

La Platell's originally but this excerpt from the article bears re-posting especially as it doesn't seem to be getting the attention of those distracted by what's by now an exceedingly high fish:

The income on which the King owes tax hasn’t been declared. We don’t know about earnings from the financial and property investments of his private estate. We’ve no idea how much he deducted from his Duchy of Lancaster income of around £25million for official expenses.

The King actually owes no tax though and that is actually the entire point. He’s voluntarily paying despite not being compelled to do so.

They also have responsibility and scrutiny that the rest of us do not have and most of us would not want.

Well now the cockroach goading made some sort of sense however limited but I'm utterly intrigued by this latest insult.

Explain?
