The royal family

Does Carole Middleton in some way out rank Camilla as the grandma of the future king ?

Seeing them together today ,it stuck me Camilla is not blood related to the royals and now carols blood flows through our future kings veins ? Obviously Camilla is queen and currently technically outranks her but does she in some way out rank her ??

That is interesting! How old was QETQM when QE2 ascended the throne?

ETA ah, someone has said, 51, so unlikely but not impossible

Edited

Yes, 51. As I said - and they probably realised - somewhat unlikely but I think an interesting footnote in history.
Not necessary now of course with females no longer below males in the LoS.

I suppose it could still happen in future though if the Queen hadn't yet had children (but was potentially pregnant) when the King died?

Good point! Yes, I hadn't thought of that. They'd have to hold fire to await news.

RaspberryRiddle · 19/06/2026 17:55

Not really a related point but I do sometimes think it's funny when Tom Parker Bowles pops up on Saturday Kitchen Live or whatever, and you remember that he's the Queen's son! It must have been odd for her kids to sort of 'lose her' to the royal family although I'm sure in reality they're still a close family.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 19/06/2026 18:08

It needs to be spelled out, I think. Next Royal Ascot Camilla, Carole and Princess Anne need to line up as a threesome and do a version of the Class System - I know my place - skit. (Two Ronnies plus John Cleese.) The bowing and curtsying gets confusing and we should be informed who to look up to most.

No, not at present.

In a future world in which George is king, Charles is dead but Camilla and Carole are both alive I don't know the answer.

I'm pretty sure that Camilla would still outrank Carole Middleton.

I knew him slightly at university. Now-DH brought him home once or twice. He seemed ordinary enough, your standard Old Etonian, and not particularly food-minded. Those guys all seemed to have had their palates surgically removed by boarding school stodge.

Yes, of course. Carole Middleton is George’s actual biological grandmother. His blood relative. A source of his DNA. Camilla is a woman to whom his grandfather happens to be married.

That doesn't mean anything in terms of Royal Ranking. You don't become a royal because your child marries a member of the Royal family.
Camilla is married to the King and if he dies before her she will become the Dowager Queen. Carole Middleton will still be Carole Middleton.

june35 · 19/06/2026 18:18

How could she? Camilla is married to the King and is Queen consort.

Interesting! I did wonder how and when he earned his 'foodie' credentials...

I think sometimes people only take into account things that happened during their own lifetime - there have been posters here who thought Diana was the only ever Princess of Wales - and hence don't understand how things from the past shape things now.
Where were the other "Queen Mothers" in history if the mother of every Queen (Consort or Regnant) had that title?
Presumably, the Queen Mother's mother would have had that title too if that were the case.
(I watch a few quiz shows and the phrase "before my time" crops up a lot, as though history waited until their birth to start happening.)

A Queen Mother is a title held by a Queen Dowager (the widow of a previous king) who is also the mother of the reigning monarch.

So it isn’t a title for simply the mother of a queen (Carole Middleton will not be Queen Morher when/if Kate becomes Queen). They only get that title if they were also Queen themselves.

It was first used for Queen Elizabeth’s mother to avoid confusion (as they both had the same Christian name).

If you read what I wrote, I wasn't asking for clarification of what the title "Queen Mother" is.
I said:

I've underlined the "if" that gives that sentence its meaning.
I know how the title was used.
I know it isn't the title for any mother of a queen.
I'm getting fed up of explaining that this was a mildly sarcastic comment.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 19/06/2026 19:35

If Charles dies neither Camilla nor Carole will be Queen Mother as neither is mother of the monarch. Camilla would be Queen Dowager as widow of King. I can imagine William might well give a title the Middletons but it’s not a certainty.

StillHereLolNow · 19/06/2026 22:09

Why would the Middletons get a title? They aren’t just handed to whoever the monarch wishes to they are only reserved for the royal blood line. If that wasn’t the case then any old Joe bloggs would be given a title.

Really? How about Sir David Beckham? Lord Archer? They're not royal.

StillHereLolNow · 20/06/2026 04:50

They are not royal titles they fall under the British honours system for outstanding contributions to society. What have the Middletons contributed? Providing William with a wife.

Lots of non-royal people get titles - baron this and that.

Do they? They could be knighted- but what for-services to producing Royal wives?

MissFenellaPrism · 20/06/2026 06:56

They won't get titles.

Dishrain · 20/06/2026 07:06

The king can give anyone they want a title. It's just in recent times a dukedom has been reserved for royal lines. I don't think they would need to give a reason other than services to the royal family if he chose to give them something. Not sure he would though, unless it is something important to them.

The Boleyns and the Seymours, if I remember correctly, received titles.

BemusedAmerican · 20/06/2026 08:43

Carol will have more influence with both William and George because of their relationship. She doesn't need a title. She has soft power.

Yes, that was when monarchs could reward loyalty and get rid of folks who were pesky irritants! 😉
