The royal family

Why was Prince Andrew always regarded as the Queen's favourite child?

I remember that Andrew was often referred to as the Queen's favourite child when she was alive, and before he was managed out of public life for being such an embarrassment to the family. He wasn't her firstborn DC or even her first son. So why did she prefer him to all the others?

He looks like Queen Victoria IMO

I don't believe The Queen would have risked a pregnancy by someone else, but a child looking like their mothers great grandmother doesn't negate the mother possibly having a child by someone else. All the Aristos are related in some way.

Skybluepinky · 18/09/2025 12:44

Because he was.

I doubt that she thought so little of her marriage vows that she would have had an affair.

Mymanyellow · 18/09/2025 12:51

Princess Beatrice is the one that looks like Queen Victoria in my opinion. Perhaps she just liked him better. Can’t see it myself but she wouldn’t be the first parent to prefer one child over another.

whataweekImhaving · 18/09/2025 12:53

Don’t know, but I loved the bit in The Crown where the Queen said of course she didn’t have a favourite child and asked if Philip did.

“of course”

”who?!”

”Anne”

😄

I think both Beatrice and Andrew look like QV.

Well that’s true, but TLQ was a devout Christian and I highly doubt she’d have had affairs.

Also apparently the Queen was raging when Edward left the Marines after a few months, and she wasnt all that impressed when he went into the theatre/TV in the 80s and 90s (plus there was a Royal Knockout).

That said Edward was the only one not to divorce, and the Queen became quite close to him and Sophie in her latter years.

It took lots of guts for Edward to leave the Marines. I respect him for that, and for trying to find his own way.

prelovedusername · 18/09/2025 15:48

Prince Philip was very supportive apparently. Training for the Marines is no picnic and Edward realised it wasn’t for him. Nothing wrong in admitting your mistakes. Others should try it.

I’ve seen a photo of Lord Porchester and one of Andrew and they look very alike. Sorry I can’t post photos but someone else might be able to.

Rumour has it that he’s not Prince Philip’s son, his father is Lord Porchester. That’s why he doesn’t look like the others.

He looks like Prince Philip's sisters.

SpottyAardvark · 18/09/2025 18:36

Because Philip wasn’t his father. Andrew looks nothing like either Philip or his brothers, and never has.

crazeekat · 18/09/2025 18:39

Cos he was cute and cheeky. Same as the spoilt child Louis who gets away with stuff as he is cute and cheeky. If Harry’s kids acted like Louis they would be unruly, spoilt brats who need a spanking. Louis is Andrew in the making.

Philip was by all accounts a scoundrel and she adored him so maybe she loved the worst of her children just because he had that bad boy streak. Hes descended into sleazy though.

Good grief! How inappropriate. No one should speak about children in that manner, you should be ashamed of yourself.

CathyorClaire · 18/09/2025 20:51

I find the late Queen’s approach to this, and then Charles’ approach to this; to be completely inadequate:

Agreed.

I'm also not sure a bit of extended nose rubbing and looking slightly awkward entirely erases the memory of W happy to be seen driving with his disgraced uncle riding shotgun twice.

We'll see.

SecondSpare · 18/09/2025 21:01

I told my DM about this thread and she is now fascinated with the idea that Lord Porchester might be Andrew's father. 😂 I have to say that I've always thought Andrew doesn't look like any of his siblings. He doesn't look like Prince Philip either.

Criticism of Louis is seen as anathema on MN. The truth is that he gets away with things all the time which George and Charlotte would have been told off for. See Louis' behaviour during KC's coronation, the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee Pageant, Trooping the Colour for a few examples. He was also kept at home during the Wimbledon Men's Final, which George and Charlotte both attended (and both of them behaved impeccably during that event).

I snoozed through that (CGAF)

Why would a 7 year old be expected to?!

HappydaysArehere · 18/09/2025 21:37

Prince Andrew fought in the Falklands and was welcomed home by the Queen as a hero to many people. For awhile he was thought to have done a really good job in the forces. It was later that stories of his bombastic and rude behaviour went the rounds. He was the Queen’s son and his sense of entitlement was evident. The Queen had time for him that she hadn’t had for her older children. Hence the Press probably helped to tag him “favourite child”.

Sausagescanfly · 18/09/2025 21:43

Do any of you have a favourite child? Surely most parents either don't have one or at least never say they have one. Why would the royal family be any different?

I respect anyone who is able to take the piss out of themselves. Edward took some sort of work experience job with Andrew Lloyd Webber in the theatre and the press sneered and called him the teaboy. So on his first day with all the jurnos assembled outside the theatre Edward turned up with a box of PG tips under his arm.

Why was Prince Andrew always regarded as the Queen's favourite child?

Philip showed his support by going to collect him.
I didn't think about it at the time but they are Royals they could easily have just sent a car.

Edward and Sophie had the benefit of having time to get to know one another away from the spotlight
Di & Charles was a poorly matched arranged marriage.
Andrew & Sarah live in the same house.
I don't know enough about Ann & Mark to comment

Ann & Tim? must be married 20+ years same with Charles & Camilla

Needspaceforlego · 19/09/2025 00:26

The reasons Andrew doesn't look like Dad or brothers is hes fatter including on the face.
Philip, Charles and Edward are all really slim and fit look at the photos of him as a young man. You'll see the family resemblance.

Maybe he looks like the Duke of Gloucester?

BTW I certainly do not believe HMQ had an affair or disregarded her vows in any way.
