This does seem particularly interesting timing bearing in mind Trump's statements about annexing Canada. So will Trump's regard for the King win out over his desire for a 51st state?

He’s going to deliver the throne speech.

It does seem as if he was asked to go to underline that Canada doesn't want to be the 51st state.

It will be interesting to follow this visit and see how it is received. The comment about not wanting to be the 51st State is sending a message.

I agree. I think it's going to be a fascinating example of how politicians use the Royal family's soft power to send messages they can't say out loud.

Agreed re the soft power, which is why I err as a constitutional monarchist rather than a republican.

wordler · 04/05/2025 17:40

It will be interesting to see how Trump’s rhetoric around Canada not being a sovereign nation will develop as the actual head of state (who he is said to admire) rocks up to give a speech.

Can’t wait to hear the language of the speech - will there be subtle / not so subtle references to the issue.

Bearing in mind Trump thinks it appropriate to tweet an image of himself as Pope, I'm expecting him to respond with an image of himself dressed up as Charles at the Coronation.

If ever there was a justification of the benefits of the UK Royal Family, this royal visit to Canada is a great example.

Mark Carney and King Charles III are a formidable team, and I love this show of strength against the gauche posturing of Trump. It's like Bugger off Trump, hands off and get back on your box and stay there as far as Canada is concerned,

Given that Trump is a sycophant as far as royalty is concerned, I hope his over-inflated ego is well and truly dented, if only for a nano-second.

GildedRage · 26/05/2025 14:36

I hope it goes well; for an older king with cancer, carney a very new to politics politician, and the southern annoyance.

wordler · 26/05/2025 16:30

Apparently Mark Carney’s brother Sean works for William as a senior staff member.

MrsLeonFarrell · 26/05/2025 17:26

It's fun seeing old photos of previous tours. Things seem a bit less formal these days.

I agree there has been a subtle shift to less formal.

I think this is perfect timing.

Putin has shown Trump what we all knew, that he had no intention of doing a deal. To be fair to Trump he does seem to want the killing to stop, he was naive in thinking Putin wanted anything other than the whole of Ukraine.

The visit by KC to Canada is sending a clear message, just as inviting Zalenski to Windsor. I have been mocked on other threads for saying that the soft power of KC and PoW can aid diplomacy because Trump is such a royalist.

Harassedevictee · 26/05/2025 18:24

Interesting KC has arrived on an Air Canada plane with True North Strong and Free written on it.

Andylion · 26/05/2025 18:33

Apparently thousands were watching the flight on Flight Radar.

ahem I may have been one of them

Edited to add: it was an RCAF plane.

GinnyCat · 26/05/2025 18:43

Funnily enough, if Trump were to make a move toward Canada, it might encourage Canadians to lean more into their ties with the British monarch, who is also the King of Canada. It could make the monarchy feel a bit more relevant or useful in Canada.

GildedRage · 26/05/2025 18:49

lovely to think canada sent over a rcaf plane to bring the king and queen over.

I wonder if they fly him back or it’s “thanks for the visit, can you organise your own Uber to go home?”

I think the RCAF plane was part of the 'Look, Trump, everyone, this is our Head of State' message that is the point of the visit. So I would think they'd bring him home.

GildedRage · 26/05/2025 23:30

certainly i get the impression people are grateful for their timely visit. doubt they will be shoved home with an uber/own flight arrangements unless the rcaf plane was not satisfactory in some way.

Trump's due to make another state visit. Doubt if he'd risk jeopardising that.

It’s interesting, isn’t it? He’s the chief operating officer at Kensington Palace apparently.

Interesting article ^^

Back off, Donald: King Charles prepares to love-bomb Canada

The king of the U.K. and Canada is reminding Donald Trump who’s head of state.

MrsLeonFarrell · 27/05/2025 07:24

It's the first time the monarch has opened parliament for 58 years, according to an article I read. I suppose for Canada having the King at this juncture is perfect, he doesn't really affect politics but is good for making a political point.

Trump doesn't actually want/think Canada will become 51st state. He was just doing it to get under Trudeau's skin. He even admitted it at his 1st meeting with Carney. It did make me smile whenever he called him Governor Trudeau.

Mylovelygreendress · 27/05/2025 07:45

C and C received a lovely warm welcome in Canada and I thought they both looked well .

Trump doesn't actually think many things. He shouts the odds re trade tariffs across the world and then, when boots are shaking, he makes concessions for a certain few, tweaking the rates, letting companies breathe again. It's typical bully boy tactics. You upset the bully - you pay for it one way or another.
