I can’t believe it’s been a year since that photo of our late Queen as she appointed Liz Truss as her 15th prime minister at Balmoral on this day last year.

Little did we know she would be gone less than 48 hours later.

She was so determined to fulfill her obligations.

She was , bless her. I still miss her

And since that day Liz truss resigned and Rishi Sunak took over - I wonder did the late queen envisage Truss resigning so soon into her tenure when she appointed her

I remember seeing that photo with Truss and thinking "oh good, she's still OK"

(not that I'm wildly and inappropriately competitive and wanted her to keep going to beat Louis XIV, who had the unfair advantage of ascending the throne aged only 4)

Yes I remember seeing the photo and I thought she looked great. Yes she had a walking stick and a bruised hand but she still looked content and happy.

@EdithWeston oh wow I wanted hee to bear Louis XIV too! Although as my friend pointed out, he wasn't exactly doing much reigning for at least the first ten years, so Her Maj won that one really.

pilates · 07/09/2023 06:46

Yes our beloved Queen is sorely missed.

Ah, really? She looked so unwell, that was obvious, you couldn't have thought she looked great!

She was some woman though, determined to do her public duty.

upinaballoon · 07/09/2023 07:42

I realise that she might have been laced up with medication at the time of meeting Liz Truss, and might have needed to rest up for the rest of the day, but I like the fact that she was indeed on her feet and dressed and had her lippy on for that meeting, so near to her death as it turned out.

Willmafrockfit · 07/09/2023 07:51

Gilmorehill · 07/09/2023 07:52

What struck me about that photo was her amazing smile.

pilates · 07/09/2023 08:35

That’s what I admired about her. She was stoic right up to the end. A hard act to follow.

user1497864954 · 07/09/2023 08:52

I remember seeing the bruising on her hand and thought she looked generally frail, however the Queen was determined to do her duty right until the end. I prefer the photo of her on her own standing in front of the fireplace.

MyFetch · 07/09/2023 08:56

I bet if she’d known Liz Truss’s general chocolate teapot level of political usefulness and the eventual length of her tenure, she’d have stayed in bed with those horrible corgis.

I like the phrase"general chocolate teapot level of political usefulness". Nice one.

Yeah it was a nice photo. She looked somewhat ‘different’ like she was thinner/frailer, but as I said, she looked happy and content. Her smile was lovely.

Most definitely. I wish she was still here.

If we go by Prince Philip’s age at the time of his death or indeed that of her mother’s age, we could still have had her for another few years as our Queen :(

I was part of Operation London Bridge, so we were warned a couple of months in advance to be prepared, Couldn't say anything to anyone at the time though, it was a terrible secret to keep

Was she peaceful on the day of her passing ? I hope she wasn’t in any pain or distress.

She obviously had as much warning, or more, as we did that the end was imminent - and clearly took it very calmly. That picture with Truss, she knew she had a couple of days left by then

I agree. Add an f-bomb in there and MyFetch could have had a job writing for The Thick of It.

Oh bless her. What actually happened on the morning of her passing for the whole RF to scramble to balmoral?

11.15am 8th September 2022

I think the house is sitting and Liz Truss is announcing her energy measures to cut bills (remember that?)

In about 10 minutes Nadhim Zahawi will pop by and whisper something, or I think it was pass a note.

The atmosphere is changing

upinaballoon · 08/09/2023 11:23

Radio this morning said C and C are going to a little service at Crathie and William to one at St. David's.

Lalgarh · 08/09/2023 12:31

C. 12.30pm 8/9/2022.

BBC politics are still on air and they've stopped talking about the energy thing and are onto reports of QEs "poor health".

Uh oh.

Then Huw Edwards presents the 1pm news in full black mourning gear and twitter goes into meltdown. Sky news are showing repeat footage of the queen meeting various dignitaries over the years and I think Kay Burley filling in in the absence of updates.
