One year since the late Queen’s last public appearance

I can’t believe it’s been a year since that photo of our late Queen as she appointed Liz Truss as her 15th prime minister at Balmoral on this day last year.

Little did we know she would be gone less than 48 hours later.

I remember seeing that photo with Truss and thinking "oh good, she's still OK"

(not that I'm wildly and inappropriately competitive and wanted her to keep going to beat Louis XIV, who had the unfair advantage of ascending the throne aged only 4)

Do you think? I thought he looked awful in that photo- gaunt and thin with a huge amount of make up on.

C. 12.30pm 8/9/2022.

BBC politics are still on air and they've stopped talking about the energy thing and are onto reports of QEs "poor health".

Uh oh.

Then Huw Edwards presents the 1pm news in full black mourning gear and twitter goes into meltdown. Sky news are showing repeat footage of the queen meeting various dignitaries over the years and I think Kay Burley filling in in the absence of updates.

I was on a day out and missed all of this part. I like the timing of your posts today.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/09/2023 13:49

It was very fitting for her, that in her last photo, she was on her feet and smiling. Anything other than that would have somehow seemed wrong for the dignified woman ray she was.

I was part of Operation London Bridge, so we were warned a couple of months in advance to be prepared, Couldn't say anything to anyone at the time though, it was a terrible secret to keep

What part did you play in the operation?

Lalgarh · 08/09/2023 15:34

@upinaballoon
Thanks. I think there might still be live news feeds from the day showing how the updates unfolded

3.30pm 8/9/22.

We know know that the queen had actually died at around 3pm.

But meanwhile there is no other news than that from the palace saying she is "comfortable and resting". News management in action.

So the news channels have a camera outside Balmoral and they are filling air with speculation. Maybe she could go to hospital. Maybe she could recover. Maybe

This is essentially like when you get The Call from the hospital telling you to come as your loved one has " breathing difficulty". It's all over bar the shouting, as it were.

I think Charles was there. The others weren't.

The news is confirmed at 6.30pm and the it's non stop Tribute mode

Kissmas · 08/09/2023 22:14

"What part did you play in the operation?"

Watching it on fake news 😂

Ted27 · 08/09/2023 22:23

Literally hundreds of public employees were 'part of' London Bridge.
Every govt department had plans in place for years.
The vast majority of us had no more inside knowledge than the general population.
It really didn't take any medical or inside knowledge to see that at the time of the Jubilee she really didn't have long to go.

I think she probably timed it herself - go out and wave to the crowds one last time, go up to Balmoral for one last summer - see the grandkids and then pop off peacefully.

beeonmybonnett · 08/09/2023 23:22

aww I can’t believe it’s been one year today since she left us 💔

I've checked out that it doesn't clash with 'Antiques Roadshow'.

C5 was raking up Lord Snowdon's muck tonight. To think that man fooled so many of us for so long.😀Babies all over the auction.

Oh god yes I saw that.

They had the nerve to refer to Tony Armstrong Jones / Lord Snowden as a "swordsman" rather than a priapic DAWG

I looked him up this morning and he did a lot of good things, as well as putting it about rather a lot. I lived through their times. I believe HMQE was personally very fond of him. If your heart isn't being carved up by a charmer, a charmer IS charming.

Dillane · 10/09/2023 07:59

That picture with Truss, she knew she had a couple of days left by then

Really @Londonbridger ? Then why weren’t more members of the RF at Balmoral such as Sophie Wessex, who she was apparently very close to?

beeonmybonnett · 10/09/2023 20:59

who is about to watch ‘the day the queen died ‘ on channel 5?

OP posts:
beeonmybonnett · 10/09/2023 22:47

Just watched it . It was quite emotional at the end just seeing her looking so frail and thin with her walking stick standing beside the fire :(

Agree entirely, also public sector and in a role where I receive the guidance.

Bonkers to think that a mnetter knew HMQ only had a couple of comfortable days left when her nearest and dearest had to make a frantic dash!

Toddlerteaplease · 22/09/2023 22:16

The fact that her children didn't make it, suggests that it was sudden an unexpected.
