A rare interview with the wonderful Princess Anne.

Pragmatic, straight-forward, and very moving, especially when she talks about what lockdown meant for elderly people.

I don't agree with her on the monarchy's links to slavery, but I really like her.

The brutality in Kenya (and Malaysai) was top-mocth dictator class.

So, key takeaways (as I would say at work):

  1. She's a good party soldier. She does what one asks of her: push key messaging and avoid any topic one does not wish to speak about as per the firm's guidelines! I am a corporate executive for a living, and I approve of her performance, given [assumed: again, I'm a corporate executive; I do not deal in royalty and I know sweet FA about 'what their real KPIs and OKRs are'; I'm only assuming!]
  2. We need to talk about that "what their real KPIs and OKRs are!" thing! The whole value proposition of "do we even constitutional monarchy" depends on it!

For the record: I'm an "undecided" but I tend "republican" at the moment. I'm also a dual citizen and, as such, have experience of an elective rather than hereditary system.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 03/05/2023 20:02

She is a wonderful woman. Yes, she is privileged, but she works very hard to justify her position

skullbabe · 03/05/2023 20:55

Jesus wept 🤣.

It was shown on Canadian TV yesterday. Loved the montage of her visits to Canada. And she has the same figure she had as a young woman, Need to start riding horses!

Do you think it’s horse riding? Not sure a horse would be able to carry me if I were to suddenly take it up 🤣

Should we ask for reparations from the Germans?

Treaty of Versailles WW1
Yalta conference reparations WW2

so what was the point of keeping slaves if not to make huge amounts of money at their expense?

CathyorClaire · 03/05/2023 21:37

I really like her.

She's somehow managed to tout herself as 'down to earth' for decades mainly on the grounds of not accepting titles for her kids despite the fact they've turned out to be among the most venal and grasping of the lot.

PR genius.

You need to check your history. Germany didn't finish paying reparations for either WW1 or WW2. What they did pay went to all the allied countries, and did not pay our dept simply because we only finished paying the USA for war loans in 2006!!! If germany hadn't started WW2 and we hadn't fought them, then we would not have owed the USA for the loans. German 'reparation' should have paid them for us but they clearly didnt.

You didn’t ask if Germany should finish paying reparations.

You asked if Germany should pay. And the answer is yes and they were asked to pay - whether they finished paying is another matter entirely which was not the question you asked.

polkadotdalmation · 04/05/2023 21:59

@skullbabe They didn't finish paying on both counts. They certainly didn't pay us enough because we had to repay America in full, which we did. I don't think splitting hairs on my use of language is a reasonable argument response. They didn't repay us.

Gilmorehill · 02/05/2023 20:37

We didn’t become one of the richest countries in the world because of slavery. It was because we were the first industrialised nation. Having an empire was actually our downfall because we had a captive market and so became uncompetitive, unlike Germany which had to innovate.

We became one of the richest countries of the world because of the following factors: enslaving people to grow sugar when it was the most sought after commodity, destroying the economy of India and stealing its wealth, creating a global empire that acted as a closed shop for our products, industrialising first. All of those are shameful things to have done, apart from the industrialisation, and that's enabled us all to destroy the planet so swings and roundabouts really.

She was savvy enough to avoid that bear trap but too set in her ways to know the language to frame it as without appearing an unfeeling privileged aristocrat sitting on a huge unearned pile tainted with blood. Of course the Queen never did these interviews and never would wise old own that she was. I find a Royal tour in a black country being very difficult to pull off now without appearing tone-deaf such have the times and mood changed.

Gilmorehill · 04/05/2023 23:04

Flappingtarps · 02/05/2023 21:46

I don't know which history books you have been reading Gilmorehill but they read very differently to the one's I studied at uni. The Empire benefited hugely from that captive market which generated huge profits. Whilst at the time resulting in UK industry becoming complacent with it's guaranteed markets. But the point is that the UK benefited hugely from the Empire. And the Empire's trading was based on slave labour.

Entire English towns and cities were built on the back of the slave trade. I was in Lancaster recently and read up on the local history. It became the fourth largest slave-trading centre in England. If I recall correctly, the town hall was built with direct profits from the sugar industry. Very sadly, there's even a little grave of a small slave boy up in one of the coastal villages who the locals found terrified, hiding in an abandoned ship.

Is that what you believe? Ok then. I’ve given so much of my time to this subject I can’t be bothered with engaging with random people on the internet who claim to know what they are talking about.

And here's the most powerful speech I've ever heard making the case about British colonialism. The inconvenient truth. 0

Thanks Vera. Some truth telling for sure.

I found the interview with Anne the other day. Why doesnt Anne maik herself look more glamorous? That updo hairstyle that she has had for years is old fashioned. Even the interviewer looks more glam. I think Anne is a very hardworking person but maybe if she put her hair down and had some layers/ Even as a young woman her hair looked no better.

CurlewKate · 13/05/2023 11:29

@Flute56 Good Lord. Why on earth should she?

She can look however she likes - she doesn't need to look "glamorous"! She always dresses appropriately for her role and engagements, and is a credit to her family. People love her because she is no nonsense and low maintenance, and because she ensures that her charities get the attention.

so can you explain why Catherine Middleton looks glamorous with her bouncy curls and 4 inch heels and Princess Diana always looked glam.

jeffgoldblum · 13/05/2023 12:43

Because all women are different!
And some don't feel the need to pander to others views on how they should look !

CurlewKate · 13/05/2023 12:45

@Hbh17 I don't love her at all. I think she's pretty awful, frankly. But I see no reason for her to be glamorous.I thought she looked fab at the coronation!

It's astonishing how history is re-written so that British people don't understand their own history or how the wealth of the nation was built from the profits of slavery.

Just saw someone wrote that britain is rich because we were the first industrialised nation - HOW DO YOU THINK THAT WAS FUNDED??!!

Most of the British elites who are considered the biggest philanthropists with statues in their cities, most of the beautiful buildings in the city of London, most of Bristol for example ... all built with the profits of slavery. Even though it was "abolished" in Britain, many owned slaves who farmed cotton etc in the colonies.

During colonial times the British royal family and slit stole countless jewels and resources from colonies, in many cases, exporting so much that local populations starved.

It's ignorant and just evil to pretend that none of this took place and we should "focus on today" while also refusing to return much of the stolen loot.

At least Germans are very honest about Nazi Germany and their past. U.K. & U.S are the equivalent of Germans telling Jewish people to "forget it because it's all in the past"
