A rare interview with the wonderful Princess Anne.

Pragmatic, straight-forward, and very moving, especially when she talks about what lockdown meant for elderly people.

I don't agree with her on the monarchy's links to slavery, but I really like her.

Princess Anne’s take on the monarchy under King Charles

Her looks are irrelevant and her appearance is nothing to do with anyone else. She’s not there to please anyone with her looks.

Her comments on slavery are awful though and nothing but whataboutery. She doesn’t come across well at all.

CurlewKate · 13/05/2023 13:10

Always amused that a member of the Royal Family isn't ever rude. They are "down to earth".

I think she mentioned modern slavery to perhaps suggest that the focus should be on solving that in the now rather than looking back.

Absolutely

CurlewKate · 13/05/2023 14:16

"I think she mentioned modern slavery to perhaps suggest that the focus should be on solving that in the now rather than looking back"

Yes. That would be much more comfortable for her?

CurlewKate · 13/05/2023 14:16

Sorry- that ? Should be a !

I watched that and wondered why the sister of the King could not be Queen, why does it have to be the wife of the King ! sounds a weird concept, but I really do think she would have made a fab queen.

Because that’s not how monarchies work? At all.

Thanks OP I love Anne. I’ve met her IRL too she was very kind and extremely funny

I don't like the way she dodged the question about the Royal family's historic links with slavery.

Why? She has nothing to answer to. Nothing to do with her personally. If someone asked me about a dodgy relative from centuries ago I’d never met I’d tell them to do one

YouWonJayne · 13/05/2023 14:37

And all of us should feel some collective responsibility for slavery

EH?? Why??

It was nothing to do with me. What YOU get up to is on you but I’ve never owned a slave

CathyorClaire · 03/05/2023 21:37

I really like her.

She's somehow managed to tout herself as 'down to earth' for decades mainly on the grounds of not accepting titles for her kids despite the fact they've turned out to be among the most venal and grasping of the lot.

PR genius.

Who Zara and Peter? How are they grasping?

I found the interview with Anne the other day. Why doesnt Anne maik herself look more glamorous? That updo hairstyle that she has had for years is old fashioned. Even the interviewer looks more glam. I think Anne is a very hardworking person but maybe if she put her hair down and had some layers/ Even as a young woman her hair looked no better.

God I know she should hand her Woman Card back.

YouWonJayne · 13/05/2023 14:53

Flute56 · 13/05/2023 12:03

so can you explain why Catherine Middleton looks glamorous with her bouncy curls and 4 inch heels and Princess Diana always looked glam.

Perhaps because they are different people entirely to Princess Anne Confused

Flute56 · 13/05/2023 17:26

CurlewKate · 13/05/2023 12:45

@Hbh17 I don't love her at all. I think she's pretty awful, frankly. But I see no reason for her to be glamorous.I thought she looked fab at the coronation!

Why do you think she is so awful? Just curious

polkadotdalmation · 13/05/2023 18:32

I think Anne has never really given a FF for all that stuff. More into horses and getting on with the day job.

derxa · 13/05/2023 18:51

It's astonishing how history is re-written so that British people don't understand their own history or how the wealth of the nation was built from the profits of slavery. I don't know where you went to school but we were taught all about it the 1970s.

notanotheroneagain · 13/05/2023 19:50

The race denial this is the most bizarre concept ever to me. There 'where will we stop narrative'.

As if white English people suffer from Viking/Roman supremacy and someone will take those groups over them for a job etc.

CathyorClaire · 13/05/2023 21:51

Who Zara and Peter? How are they grasping?

The Tindalls tout themselves to anyone with a wallet regardless of moral compass (see William Hill). Zara landed £100k for a six gig a year deal then lied about it and Peter (even aside from the Chinese milk jaw-dropper) trousered £750k in an uncontested tender for arranging the Patron's Lunch. An event that raised less than half his fee for charity.

Because if you have a basic knowledge of history and therefore even a basic knowledge of the wrongs perpetrated by our country, in our name, and how we have benefited from them financially to the detriment of other countries, then you will be aware that it’s not a part of our history one can feel proud of surely?

And even if it was done in our name, even a long time ago, it has led to financial imbalances in the present day, from which we continue to benefit.

Flappingtarps · 13/05/2023 22:37

And if it was done in our name

sorry, too many ‘even’s in last para

Yes it’s part of British history - but as a British citizen it’s totally ludicrous and illogical to expect me to take responsibility for it. It had nothing to do with me, and the fact I was born in the country centuries later where it happened is entirely irrelevant.

Would you prefer they were paid taxpayers money?

The point is that if you are a British citizen then you cannot morally ignore the legacy of your forefathers. Just as a contemporary German citizen can’t. You may not be personally responsible but you have inherited the nation’s collective responsibility whether you like it or not.

If you could please read the thread I have already linked below what a group of Caribbean countries have suggested should happen, basically involving greater acknowledgement, official apologies, the return of certain artefacts and agreed financial reparation.

"I think she mentioned modern slavery to perhaps suggest that the focus should be on solving that in the now rather than looking back."

Of course she did. That's what people with huge amounts of unearned privilege and no empathy do.
