The royal family

I was surprised in Royal marriages, bride pays for dress

In Royal marriages the bride seems to pay for the dress, or her family.
So Meghan paid for her own wedding dress.
Kate's parents paid for her wedding dress.
Diana's father paid for her wedding dress. Maybe that explains why Diana's dress was only £9,000, although now she has worn it its valuation has soared.
I can't find who paid for Camilla's wedding dress.

Is this a common custom in the aristocracy?

That was joke btw, we all know Markle gets other men to pay her way up through life, whole list of them. I’m sure the bill for the dress went to someone besides her.

Is there any need?🙄

cosmiccosmos · 13/01/2023 17:38

I think it's normal to pay for your own dress but I am surprised how many posters think it's still normal for the brides parents to pay for the wedding. This is yet another 'tradition' soaked in patriarchy, like the groom asking the fathers permission to marry - it's just yeuch!

Ridemeginger · 13/01/2023 17:29

Whether Charles paid for it or not, Meghan paid for nothing/nothing else, and for that, she should be hugely grateful (as should her loser husband).

You lot just can't help.yourselves can you ?🙄

Samcro · 13/01/2023 17:43

I wonder who pays for things like the bridesmaids dresses, did Middleton have to pay for Charlotte for example

2bazookas · 13/01/2023 17:43

Doesnt every bride (or her family) provide /pay for her dress?

I did.

@Ridemeginger Why should Meghan be extremely grateful that Charles paid for Harry and Meghan's wedding?
I do not think she should be extremely grateful. Of course you say thanks, but it is what I would expect.
And the taxpayers pay the largest cost of all the Royal weddings i.e. the security.

Of course she should be bloody grateful! As should Harry. What sort of person takes a freebie to the tune of £20m in which she is the central star, her face beamed all over the world making her an instant global icon, and doesn't feel gratitude to the people paying for it - be it RF or British tax payer. There was no reason for them to have this lavish wedding and for them to invite a load of random celebrities they don't even know, thus upping the security bill. It is quite possible to have a modest wedding that is also a royal wedding.

Anyone should be grateful when someone else pays for their wedding.

@Ridemeginger It is screened on TV for the benefit of the Royal Family, the public and the government.
If it was a wedding held in private I would agree. It was not.

You lot what? Think a woman of wealth, a feminist, should pay her own way? And if she doesn't, should be grateful to those who pay for her?

But it was ok for William and Kate to.have a lavish wedding g?
And Eugenie?
Three of the Queens children all.had lavish first wedding ,s I think it was only Edward who had a relatively modest wedding
Why is it ok for others to have lavish wedding,s but not Harry and Meghan?

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 13/01/2023 17:49

I think it's rare in the UK for the dress to be paid for by the groom/groom's family. It might come out of joint money if the couple already have shared finances; that wouldn't apply to a traditional Royal Wedding though.

Straw man. None of those other couples are moaning about being hard done by in £20m Netflix/book deals. None of those brides are complaining about paying for their own wedding dresses, as the OP appears to be on behalf of MM. I don't particularly care about any of them having lavish weddings, including H&M. I do care when they complain about being hard up and hard done by, and I do care about the basic bad manner of ingratitude.

Show me the protocol, statute or anything else that dictates that a wedding of a minor royal be conducted in public.

WonderingWanda · 13/01/2023 18:03

My parents paid for my dress.

MissMarpleRocks · 13/01/2023 18:13

Why are posters referring to Meghan as Markle? I’m not her greatest fan but find that quite rude.

Because he’s the spare. Surely you know? 😉

No need for such expense for Harry or for Eugenie. Of course it is expected for the next heir to the throne, Prince William and Princess Catherine.

£9k was a fortune in 1981!!!!

It was half the price of an average house.

FurAndFeathers · 13/01/2023 20:23

babsanderson · 13/01/2023 16:10

@TheCraicDealer Your figures are out. I used an inflation calculator tool linked.
£31k is cheap for a celebrity wedding dress.

Celebrity didn’t exist in the early 1980s like it does today

it was a much less showy era

mightymam · 13/01/2023 20:26

My friend tells me that in the Pakistani/Muslim culture, there are two parts to a marriage. The brides family cover the costs of the first event (official marriage) and the parents of the groom cover the costs of the second event (the after party).

As far as we're aware, Kate isn't bleating to the world about how hard done by she is.

She’s also the future Queen.

HaroldeVwilliam · 13/01/2023 20:41

How much was megs dress. Apparently Diana would have been around 50 grand.at the time I wasn't keen.
Now I think hers was a sensation.
The way the tiara's glitters and her veil...the mounds and mound's of fabric...

Indore it.

Didn't like Kate's.

Lostinthecoop · 13/01/2023 20:43

How do we know autumn Philips dress was £2-3k. I bought mine made to measure from Sassi holford on the kings rd for about £2.5k in 2010. I googled and it’s identical from the front but hers is much fancier at the back and has a train.

if you are googling that frock on the website snd seeing the price they are not the same dress.

dont know how I feel to have a faux royal copy dress.
