I mean it's no surprise, people love gossip. Tabloids wouldn't sell if people didn't like gossip, and this a 400 page tabloid piece with a nice price tag.

The Domesday Book is historically important. Magna Carta is historically important. Four hundred pages (four hundred pages??) of ego and anger and rancour filled fiction isn't.

Describing the plot of a novel within your novel feels very “fillery” to me. He had a word count to reach, clearly!
