"I want you to be happy Harold"

Someone please explain to me why Harry didn't believe this. When PW swore on their mother's life that all he wanted was for his brother to be happy why didn't Harry believe him?

Harry says his brother "crossed a line". He used the trump card he hadn't used before which they had promised to each other they would only use to get through to each other for something really important.

It seems to me that PW didn't utter those words lightly. That he chose the moment to use his trump card because it was so critical to get through to his brother. Then why did Harry reject his attempt as fake? Why isn't this explored in the interview?

Completely agree OP, guess we will have to buy the book to find out...

It sounds like a line out of Steptoe and Son.

I think by this time Harrys head was so filled with all the confusion, unhappiness, paranoia etc he had been experiencing since his mother died and in particular since meeting Meghan, who fed into the paranoia, wearing Diana's perfume and trying to upend royal protocol (rightly or wrongly), that he was beyond reasoning with.

After all, how can you reason with someone who honestly doesn't see how horrendous his actions and words are and how hurtful to his family, and yet say he wants to be reconciled with them. He seriously doesn't get it and if this was the sort of thing William was dealing with, no amount of secret words would get through to him.

I think Harry has always been unstable but we are only seeing it now.

DorritLittle · 09/01/2023 21:03

I wondered that too.

Spck · 09/01/2023 21:29

Yes and Harry maintains in all three interviews that no one from the RF has reached out to him.

AnnieApple123 · 09/01/2023 21:33

His name in his birth certificate is actually Henry not Harold. So this quote seems an odd one.

Somanysocks · 09/01/2023 21:48

It's a nickname apparently

Ruffpuff · 09/01/2023 21:53

After seeing the way he reacted to the interviewer and blatantly denying they accused the rf of racism, I’ve come to the conclusion he’s not well mentally. It was like asking a toddler if they pulled the cat’s tail, with them vehemently denying it after you saw it with your own eyes. I don’t think anyone thinking logically would do that.

I think PW and the rest of the rf were starting to see him unravel at this point. I think it’s was a desperate attempt from PW to reach out.

Wait until tomorrow when all the journalists have read the whole thing in English and we might find out.

(As an aside posters who desperately shout "anyone?? Anyone??" Every 5 minutes because their post hasn't garnered the attention they believe it deserves really piss me off)

Because his brother suggested that things were moving too quickly with Meghan. William didn’t fall at her feet and dared to urge Harry to be cautious and to get to know her before committing.

That seems to be the start of the falling out. To me it sounds like sensible brotherly advice, to him (and her) it seems to have been a betrayal. Not only questioning his judgment but also undermining the epic love story Harry and Meghan had concocted.

Blossomtoes · 09/01/2023 21:57

Meghan, who fed into the paranoia, wearing Diana's perfume

Please tell me you made that up. That’s just sick.

Harry says in the book that from childhood, his nickname for his brother was 'Willy' and William's nickname for him was 'Harold'.

MechanicaHound · 09/01/2023 22:19

I agree OP. The way he described it, it sounds like William was desperately trying to reach out to Harry and get through to him. But Harry petulantly kept refusing to make eye contact, and then dismissed him out of hand. Harry sounds impossible to deal with. I felt so sorry for William, hearing about this!

It's because my thread had disappeared and then when I posted "anyone?" it told me it hadn't posted due to a technical . error but it actually had

Ruffpuff

Totally agree with you .

The story just keeps changing, so sad to watch these car crash interviews.

Yes me too! Maybe PW was genuinely trying to get through to his brother and instead was misunderstood

I wonder why?

The thing I find surprising about this is it’s like he’s genuinely says it like it’s a big revelation.

‘No. we don't talk’
No shit Sherlock!

trucklebrunch · 09/01/2023 22:33

This sounded so sad, and William so desperate. Trying to pull Harry back from the depths of his paranoia- possibly taking the opportunity when Meghan was not with him. But at that point I think he realised his baby brother was lost to him.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 09/01/2023 22:34

Ah ok you are forgiven then @NotABeliever

WimbyAce · 09/01/2023 22:36

It is really sad but I think it happens a lot in families where you try and help someone and they won't listen. I do still have sympathy for him though, have that image of him as a toddler in his dungarees with his mama and it just breaks my heart. He is a lost soul.

Neverendingcough · 09/01/2023 22:36

I agree that this was a desperate attempt from one brother to another to try to get through to Harry and state the very basics that he loves him and that’s all.

I really do think Meghan has a huge role in it all
