I think Oprah is irrelevant at the moment although I’m a huge fan of Oprah and always enjoy her interviews.

I agree. I think he was a great support to her. It’s sad news.

@FinallyFluid

He served her well and never once felt the need for Oprah.
Wow any opportunity to slate Harry & Meghan. It's really not necessary is it.

I like Steven Fry’s tweet

Well, I for one am very sorry to see the old boy go. But I know there are plenty out there keen to tell us all how little they care. So keen that you might almost think that they … well … care

Endlesscleaning · 09/04/2021 18:24

Sad news, for the Queen and royal family, although he had a long and fascinating life.

Listened to the Radio 4 programme earlier, and had no idea about his War record or that he was so interested in conservation.

Holothane · 09/04/2021 18:27

It’s the Queen I feel for she’s lost her husband of over 70 years.

I think that's a good way of putting it.

The Queen and the DofEd are just so much the fabric of the nation

LookAChicken · 09/04/2021 19:37

The radio 4 programme with the military historian was interesting.

Parker231 · 10/04/2021 08:55

News stations are reporting it will be a royal funeral rather than a state funeral with up to 30 attendees in line with Covid restrictions. Prince Harry is expected to attend.

If it's 30 them who makes the cut?

HMQ (1)

Children and spouses

Prince Charles and Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Andrew, Princess Anne and Cdr Lawrence, Prince Edward and Countess of Wessex (7)

Grandchildren and spouses
Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Duke of Sussex (assuming Duchess will not travel at this stage of pregnancy), Princess Beatrice and Edo, Princess Eugenie and Jack, Peter Philips (separated), Zara and Mike Tindall, Viscount Severn and Lady Louise (12)

That leaves 10 places (assuming you don't have to count the Archbish and the Lord Chamberlain)

So who next?

Any other relatives of HMQ (she has 7 cousins still living)?
Other family of the Duke? (sisters all deceased, don't know if he was close to any nieces/nephews)

Oldbutstillgotit · 10/04/2021 17:11

According to OS , H will attend the funeral . Apparently M “ made every effort “ to go but is not joining him.

Oldbutstillgotit · 10/04/2021 17:12

I am assuming it’s due to her pregnancy.

Is there any Mountbatten's left? Or some of his nieces/ nephews

The King and Queen of Spain called him Uncle Philip so I'm thinking they might get an invite depending on how close they were.

Imo it’ll be

Lady Pamela Hicks (assuming she’s well enough) with one of her children
Countess of Mountbatten
Princess Alexandra, Duke of Kent, Duke of Gloucester, Prince Michael of Kent
Earl of Snowden & Lady Sarah Chatto

That’s assuming Philip doesn’t have any UK based nieces or nephews that he is close with

There isn't exactly a correct thread to put this on to, so I chose to put it on this one. Today I read that Prince Philip's mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg, was born profoundly deaf but became so adept at lip-reading that people often had no idea. (He was patron of the RNID.) Well, there's a thing I know now that I never knew before.
