After the Duke died there were lots of programmes on. Personally, I didn't think it was necessary for the BBC to devote all of its channels to remembering the Duke. That was annoying for people who wanted the daily diet of speculation and hyperbole which passes for news nowadays.
ITV advertised a programme which said that it was going to talk about his war service but in the event it said very little about his war service. However, I did find an interview on line, and I watched it. It went into more detail. I knew that he'd been in the navy during the war but I didn't really know more than that. I found out that he'd been in the Med but then in the Baltic and finally in, I hope I have it right, Tokyo Bay, at the time of the Japanese surrender. I don't think he was in charge of the ship, but he was an officer. He stayed on the ship, he wasn't ashore. Boatloads of men, who had been prisoners of war, were brought over to the ship, several loads I think - men who had probably not been well treated (that could be an understatement) being welcomed back by men who had been serving on the ship and had had enough food etc. Apparently when they were all on the ship everyone just sat and cried.
Years later the Duke went with the Queen, on an official visit to Japan. A Japanese official asked him if it was his first visit to Japan. I don't know whether Prince Philip got as far as giving a proper answer, but I don't think he spoke the undiplomatic truth to the man.
