Cats and their sponge cake obsession

What is it with cats and sponge cake? They seem to adore it with every fibre of their being. Are other people's cats like this, or just mine?

DH came home today with some madeira cake and cut a slice each for him and me. We sat down in the living room with said cake and cups of tea, and our normally cute, sweet, fluffy poppet turned into a monster who accosted DH and nearly swiped the cake clean off his plate. She would not leave either of us alone until she got some. Of course, being the good cat staff we are, naturally we capitulated.

We once had a cat who ate half a swiss roll when our backs were turned.

Mine doesn’t care for it at all. Lick-e-lix and any bowl with a spoon and something like custard or cream is his crack.

pinneddownbytabbies · Yesterday 18:08

Oh yes, mine like those too!

Ours is mad for doughnuts. He will also have a little nibble of a waffle if there's any left out.
What he's really after though is the chicken carcass from the compost bin 🤢

Favouritefruits · Yesterday 18:24

One of mine loves cake, but she’s a bit of a dustbin in general 😂

Dilbertian · Yesterday 18:24

MrCat gets in dh’s face if dh dares to sit on the sofa with a cheese and jam sandwich. You might think it’s the cheese he’s after, but he’s not nearly as interested if there’s no jam.

No, we don’t give him any. He was MrFatCat when we adopted him. Not any longer, and not again.

He eventually gives up after he’s been (gently) pushed away a few times.

Marmite, OTOH - well, I’d best not sit on the sofa with anything Marmite while MrCat is around. He’ll climb right up me, all 15yo 6.2kg of him, if there’s any Marmite within sniff.

My cat goes nuts over sweet waffles. As I discovered one day when I had some in the toaster ready to toast and he grabbed one from out of the toaster!

I think I started a thread about this some time ago. I didnt think cats liked sweet things or couldnt taste sweet things but I remember the vet saying recently that our cats medication would be tolerable to her because it was sweet

My cats have always gone mad for sponge cake. I find bites taken out of it

Cats are supposed to hate even the smell of citrus, but one of DBro's cats in the past had a passion for lemon drizzle cake. My darling Boycat used to love ice cream, he liked the raspberry ripple more than vanilla or clotted cream.

BurntBroccoli · Yesterday 19:39

Mine has a thing for freshly buttered toast. It has to be lightly browned though!

Also cheese but only Cathedrals city!

The Madeira cake probably contains a lot of butter which is what attracts them. It’s the fat content.

OMG
I never knew about this until I had a couple of slices and then folded over the end of the packaging and left on the side. Came to the kitchen the next morning with the top all scraped off, because they don’t even bite it like any other food, they just lick it?? 😂😂

TheeNotoriousPIG · Yesterday 20:05

For one of our cats when I was growing up, it was our grandmother's homemade coffee cake. She would put it on a plate and wrap it in clingfilm. If left on the side, you could be assured that the next time you saw it, it would have craters in it, and he would be looking very pleased with himself.

They also continue to enjoy ready salted crisps, and the boy cat also likes chomping on herbs/plants of any description, so Christmas floral arrangements as gifts are a nightmare!

Floattheboats · Yesterday 20:08

Mine likes cantaloupe melon. Cats love sweet tastes which is why antifreeze is such a danger to cats. It’s a sweet taste and also poisonous

pinneddownbytabbies · Yesterday 20:38

My childhood cat once brought home the prize of a crinkle-cut chip.

Finlay used to like baked beans
Fergus has only been allowed plates to lick so far and enjoys anything meaty or creamy

Growlybear83 · Yesterday 21:17

I thought it was just my cat who loves cake. But his real favourite is prawn cocktail sauce. I thought he was desperate for the prawns when I made prawn cocktails but then I realised it was the sauce, and he loved mayonnaise on its own too. He’s also partial to frozen chips.

Mine tries to steal onion bhajis Confused

Our cat would eat bits of cake but loved ginger parkin, she would do her very best to shove you over to get to it.

Also liked marmite. When dds were small I had to supervise any marmite toast eating as they would lose to the cat.

Our tuxie once nibbled every single lemon muffin that we had left on the kitchen table! We thought it was mice for a minute except there were no droppings or other evidence! And she also nibbled one half of a sponge cake made for mums birthday! Luckily we had time to make another half before my mum arrived!

I have a greedy ex street cat who is diabetic and gets an injection 2x a day. No cake for him!

Ogonek · Yesterday 22:00

It was my job as a teen to bake two fatless sponges for Saturday tea-time (filled with cream and jam, delish). One day I left them cooling on the rack while I popped out, and came back to find a heap of broken rubble, and our tabby cat hiding guiltily under a chair with crumbs all over her whiskers. She was mad for cake.

Ketzele · Yesterday 23:45

My cat turns his nose up at chicken, tuna, yogurt and cheese, but bloody loves raw broccoli and cauliflower. He's also partial to a French stick, particularly the crusty nub.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · Yesterday 23:59

My old cats liked Pringles and cakes. One was an apple cake but there were sponge ones (Madeleines) including Victoria sponge. Current cake don’t think she’s interested.

ilovesooty · Today 01:07

Little Tennyson is extremely partial to Victoria sponge and always has some on his birthday. He likes Eton Mess, curry, cottage cheese, hard boiled egg and coleslaw as well.
