Cats and their sponge cake obsession

What is it with cats and sponge cake? They seem to adore it with every fibre of their being. Are other people's cats like this, or just mine?

DH came home today with some madeira cake and cut a slice each for him and me. We sat down in the living room with said cake and cups of tea, and our normally cute, sweet, fluffy poppet turned into a monster who accosted DH and nearly swiped the cake clean off his plate. She would not leave either of us alone until she got some. Of course, being the good cat staff we are, naturally we capitulated.

We once had a cat who ate half a swiss roll when our backs were turned.

One of our cats loves shortbread.

Crumpets and toast. Crisps, mashed potato, chips, roast potatoes, anything potato based really. Cat tax. He's blind but can still manage to hunt down anyone eating something he thinks should be his.

I had a Siamese cat who stole food all the time. I had a piece of birthday cake wrapped in tin foil on the kitchen side. He managed to unwrap it and snaffled the lot!

He lived until he was 19 and he just didn't wake up one day, he was a real pain in the bum, but what a lovely boy he was!

My first cat as an adult I accidentally discovered she was crazy for chocolate! I had one of those tubs of Maltesers you get at Christmas and it was open on the floor whilst my bf at the time and I were watching a film. I heard a strange noise - looked down and saw my cat was delicately picking maltesers out of the bucket one by one and dropping them on the floor next to it. She then started licking them (and batting them around the room to also play with them). Learnt not to leave chocolate out that day!

Another time she took a “flump” out of a tub and was biting bits off which made the marshmallow fly across the room for her to chase after she’d eaten the first bit.

I miss her so much, she was such a character.

I had a cat, who loved chocolate - especially chocolate buttons! She also ate crisps!

Aw this is sweet to read because my old girl (no longer here) used to go up on the surfaces and find Madeira cake, when my dd was little and went thru a cake phase.
We ended up calling cake licky bread because that's all she did to it lol.

Cheerios, frozen peas and anything with egg or butter in it, so sponge cake is a cert.

My cat loves peas too!

I have 3

1 has a thing for bleach and goes mental if she smells it
2nd has a think for cake and bread - no baked goods are safe.
The third speaks mushrooms - I cannot open back without at least 1 mushroom being stolen

Girl cat : mayonnaise
Boy cat: spam, and he likes licking any plate that had a paprika based sauce on it.

Washing up is done promptly in our gaff.

goodnessidontknow · 16/10/2026 11:59

Mine is the same, he'll turn his nose up at tuna but will literally climb me if I have cake.

Meg and Mog will not touch fish of any sort however they do like cheese, plain boiled rice and salt and black pepper crisps. Mog (smaller cat) also likes milk

They don't normally like sweet things - but they go mad for butter so if the cake contains butter, that's probably why.

Oreosareawful · 16/10/2026 12:23

None of mine have ever shown an interest in sponge cake, but Gizmo is very partial to a custard cream and we can't leave a pack of cheddars (cheese biscuits) unattended. He will hound us for chips too- especially if they come from the chippy! Buttered toast is also vulnerable. Little bugger.

murasaki · 16/10/2026 13:13

Mine do both like fish. As girl cat was good yesterday and allowed me to eat my dinner in peace, despite sitting sadly on the table about 6 inches from the mayo on my plate, I did give her a bit of sea bass as a prize before whipping the mayo smeared plate into the sink.

My black boy, Minx, is food obsessed and once stole a steak from my husband's plate, my ginger boy, Gizmo, took my ham sandwich from my bag and unwrapped the clingfilm to get to the ham. 🥰😂

My ex's two cats once appeared through the cat flap as a tag team with a muddy, leaf covered, cooked leg of lamb. I felt for whichever neighbour who must have gone to their kitchen and wondered where it had gone while resting......

He cut the muddy bits off and the cats feasted well for a few days apparently. He felt awful though....

Apparently getting it through the cat flap was full on Chuckle Brothers, to me to you....
